You need to find your opponents and defeat them, but your energy is always draining and you only have 5 shots. There are charging pads all around you where you can recharge your energy and shots, BUT! If you recharge on a pad, it TRANSMITS a pulse throughout the level, giving away your position. You can use the pulses from other players to find them and defeat them. If you lose all your charge, you'll lose one heart. Lose all your hearts and you die. You can also fire at other players to make them lose hearts, so watch out for stray shots. The fewer players there are left, the faster your energy drains, so defeat your foes quickly!

This is a 4-player split-screen there-can-be-only-one style game. It requires 4 controllers to play.

This game was created in 48 hours for Global Game Jam 2018 with PIGSquad.

A game I made for a short little game jam at my university. Heavily inspired by the Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy series. I put in probably just around 20 man hours.

Archimedes!! is a clone of Palamedes by HOT-B, an old game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Match dices and then use Yahtzee-style combos to delete more dices from the board. Survive as long as you can, while the dice fall faster and faster.

CONTROLS:
Left and right arrow keys/Left and right on the Pico-8 D-Pad: Move Archimedes
Z/Pico-8 O key: Change dice color
X/Pico-8 X key: Shoot dice
Down arrow/Down on the Pico-8 D-Pad: Confirm combo and clear lines

COMBOS:
3 of the same number in a row (ex. [i][b]3-3-3

Hello! We just completed the global game 2018 and we decided to learn PICO-8 for that! We started from scratch apart from looking at a few tutorials, so everything is a bit messy, but here we are!

The theme of the GGJ 2018 was 'transmission' and we decided to make a game of communication in space.
The feedback is still rough (hard to grasp what is happening at some times), but we are quite happy with what we did 2 days without knowing anything! PICO-8 sure is fun to use and, strangely, we had a lot less problems fixing issues in this game than with other jams, as due to the fact that everything was in our control we soon learnt where the errors were.

Let me know what you think!

Here are the game instructions:

  • HELLO WO#?! is a game of communication in space

  • Commands
    - X to confirm a selection
    - Z to view diplomacy status
    - Arrows to move the selection cursor

  • You are the planet 2242 Sagot.
  • Your goal is to communicate with other planets in order to form alliances and avoid being destroyed.
    • You cannot actually win in the game (as of now), but you can try reaching the highest number of allies possible
  • Your planet has a small home icon.

  • At each turn, you are given a recipient to message.

    • You can either choose a good message or an insult.
    • Press X to select the message
  • After you choose the recipient, the message appears above your planet and the needed translation to communicate with the inhabitants of the other planets appears on it

    • You have 60 seconds to form a transmission route between you and the target planet.
    • Use arrow keys to navigate towards the target planet
    • All planets in-between will affect the message due to interferences, you need to find a route that helps deliver the correct message.
    • Press X to send the message to the target planet when you have it selected.
    • If you are out of time, the message will not be delivered and it will count as an error
  • After the message raaches the target planet, you will get an effect based on your intent and whether the message was correct

    • if the message was correct and you were friendly, the target and all other planets in its faction will raise their friendliness
    • if the message was correct and you wanted to insult, the target and all other planets will lower its diplomacy status. However, all other planets will rise it a bit.
    • if the message was an error or it timed out, all planets (and the target in particular) will be angry
  • After that, a new turn will start

    • all planets will have their interferences re-rolled
  • When the diplomacy value of a planet reaches a given threshold, it may become an ally or an enemy

    • if the diplomacy is too low, the planet will become an enemy and won't show anymore what
    • if the diplomacy is high enough, the planet will become an ally and it will not interfere anymore with your messages!
    • if you have 4 enemies, you lose the game!
  • Final notes:
    • During the game, you can keep Z pressed to view the diplomacy status and faction of all planets

Our first game with the PICO-8, and done from scratch for the Global Game Jam 2018 so please forgive the horrendous code and probably lack of knowledge of some more advanced PICO-8 tricks ;)

Some bugs or unbalances are in there, the waves are not working the way we intended and canons cost way too much... Oh well :D

Cart #48644 is an okay-balanced game, that we had time to put together at the very end of the jam.
Cart #48720 introduces a better balanced game, that is more fast paced and also has slightly better feedback on some actions (like toggling the command mode), that we worked on after the jam.

Use the following controls to defend your Transmission Tower.

left - walk left / enter command
right - walk right / enter command
up - enter command
down - enter command
primary - shoot
secondary - toggle command mode

I've seen at the lower end of the front page of pico-8 that it has "Discounted take-home licenses for individual students", How does one get a student discount for a student like me?

What would it take to see pico8 on NES/SNES Classic Mini?

Not just for playing but also for creating. USB keyboards can now be used via a micro USB OTG adapter so you could use it as a development machine.

Of course it would be offline only, you'd have to sync with a computer to get your game off for distribution online.

I'm quite happy to start a fund to make this happen? @zep

A test in making 3D graphics within Pico. I'm pretty pleased with the result, although the shader isn't working well enough to show off here.

Hello there! This is an example project which is intended to help people learn about making platformers in Pico-8.

The game is free to play, but the source code for this version has been obfuscated, so it's not really practical to look through it. To read the normal-and-legible version of the source code (with or without comments), you can buy it for at-least-$1 on itch.io. As long as you make your own map, you can even sell games that use this code! If you didn't already know, itch.io has very nice support for Pico-8 games.

Anyway, it's a cute little platformer with a grappling hook (you get the hook about halfway through) and a big finale! The main goal was to make a piece of illustrative/educational content which was centered around a real and complete game. See, "Madness Interactive" taught me that reading source code for a game that's fun to play can be much more exciting than reading a code snippet in the middle of some online tutorial. Not sure if I succeeded, but I tried real hard!

Huge thanks to David Carney for helping me with the music, and also to everyone who volunteered to test the game! Y'all made the game better.

A first run seems to take 20-45 minutes or so, but it depends on the player, and a fast runthrough is around three and a half minutes. If you record a video of a run that's faster than that, I'd love to see it!

It looks like the preprocessor expansion of the arithmetic assignment operators breaks a traditional expectation of precedence:

x += true and 1 or 2

expands to:

x = x + true and 1 or 2
-- runtime error: attempt to perform arithmetic on a boolean value

where "x + true" binds more tightly than "true and ...". The fix is to use parens in the expansion:

x = x + (true and 1 or 2)

The workaround is to use parens around the original rhs.

Anxious Tedium is an experimental PICO-8 album. You can move around a little bird while listening through these tracks.
The Soundcloud album for these tracks are available at https://soundcloud.com/bethveni/sets/anxious-tedium.

If you are interested in using one of these songs in your project/game, contact me on @bethanyvenefica on twitter for permission and details!

This is still a WIP and my first almost complete production for pico-8.

Missing:

  • an actual end game (now it resets and bugs).
  • more wave
  • a boss?

Cart #48580 | 2018-01-26 | Code ▽ | Embed ▽ | License: CC4-BY-NC-SA

Things I'm happy about:

  • procedural explosions
  • procedural blinking starfields
  • 8-bit art is almost ok for me
  • actor model too complicated but works nonetheless

Not sure I'm motivated to finish this though.
