I'm trying to make a remix of celeste 2: Lani's trek.

The issue is that I have NO IDEA what this map is...
How am I supposed to create the levels?.. I don't understand what is going on...

To anyone who has experience of making a their own version of celeste 2, could you please help me out and tell me how this works?

Thank you.

After lots of looking for a decent portable Pico-8 console that I could code on I settled on a used Pocket C.H.I.P. for a pretty good price. So far I had trouble updating it to take advantage of certain things but I eventually figured out how to update Pico-8. Now I just have to learn how to make use of the big scary terminal and get better at coding Lua!
UPDATE: About a week after I got it, it turned on in my bag and killed itself somehow. It is now just a brick of plastic with a screen. :( The error is with pocket home not launching because some files are gone and since Nextthing.co went bankrupt I don't know where to find replacements. If you have any advice that isn't just reflashing it that would be appreciated because I still am scared of the terminal and don't have a linux computer (other than a steam deck). Also sorry I have been silent for so long I just had a lot going on otherwise and haven't had much time to do this and my other interests. I have been working on a short funny game off and on for all of this time though so hopefully I will post that sometime.

hey so basically, on the P8SCII chart, the first row of characters (1-15) seems to be inaccessable when using chr() and there seems to be no keyboard shortcuts to type them out. anyone know anything about this?

Sonic Blast on Pico 8???

Yes, it is true. While I only expect to get one level done, I believe this would be awesome to see Pico-8 pushed to make a cool little tech demo like this!

Didn't you just take this?

No actually, I made it and uploaded in on an older account, but I made this one as more of a good start to learning Lua code and the community surrounding Pico-8!

Will we see more?

Of course! If people are interested enough, I can post on the regular updates around 1-2 days to let everyone know about my progress.

With those main questions I suspect to hear out of the way:

I NEED YOURE HELP!

If anyone has the time to help me out with music, it would be incredible for this little project of mine to gain attraction. As I am terrible at making music for games.

Hi everyone!
I noticed a weird behavior with the print function in Picotron.
When I call it from inside the _update or _draw functions, the return values are numbers, as expected. However, if I call it from inside the _init function, the return values are nil.
Is this the expected behavior? If so, why does it work like this?
Thanks in advance!

Controls

Press X to shoot
Press O/Z to use the bomb when charged
Bombs clear basic enemies as well as enemy bullets! So defensive use can be paramount to success.

About

This is my first game that I programmed essentially by myself. My method was to try to figure out what I was doing and then I would watch the LazyDevs shmup tutorial after finalizing my ideas or getting stuck. That method helped me learn a lot, but also left me with some unclean code. But I think the game is fun, and I hope you will too!

Hey all!

I came across this website today for the first time and was playing a few carts on the main page. I was playing this EXCELLENT game from one of the selections on the right, not realizing that these carts re-load when leaving the page. I have literally been browsing for an hour and a half trying to find it, here and on itch.io. I was hoping you may be able to help.

  • Was a very polished/high quality game
  • Color scheme was nearly all black and white
  • Character design was high quality

  • Game started with you choosing 1 available character with others that were locked
  • You were shown 6 sides of your die that contained a sword, spear, shield, and sling
  • Once game starts you are on a 5x12 ish grid split into 5x6 + 5x6
  • Character could move freely on his grid, while an enemy or multiple enemies could move on their grid
  • Character rolls a die for an item (sword, spear, shield, or sling)
  • Game pauses momentarily showing you the "range" of the weapon

Catch The Circle

This is a short reflex based game.
Challenge yourself and sharpen your skills.
The higher score the better you are.
100pts you are average.
under 50pts... do some pushups.
10pts for landing center.
Everything else gets you 2pts, unless you totally miss, then you get nothing.
Hope you enjoy getting better reflexes.
This is my first. Hopefully not my last.

Wanted to try Picotron (love it!) and shame plug an upcoming show at the same time!

Game instructions:
You have to make it to the dpfks show.

Arrow keys to move
Z to jump
X to interact

v3 includes afterlife!

Game design and art inspired by mplsjake!

Note: The player sprite is based on an 8x8 I saw somewhere in the PIco-8 forums and was always meant to be a placeholder but it was too cute and i couldn't see it any other way after a while. For the life of me I cannot find where this came from! If it's you I would love to give you credit. (Or remove it if you would so desire.)

Hello, all. Thanks for checking out my little remake.

So, I started working on this in late 2023, and then got distracted by Picotron and, well, life. But with the release of TRON: Ares coming up, I wanted to get it to a completed state.

It's a remake of an Atari VCS/2600 game called Adventures of TRON. It was one of my favorites as a kid. But I remember wondering why they used such random colors for the levels, and for TRON himself in particular. This Pico-8 version, an exercise in pushing myself to learn enough about Pico-8 to make a complete game (as opposed to the simple screensavers and timers I was doing), was born from wanting to see that old game with better colors.

I added an introductory story, a how to play screen (accessed by hitting the O button on the title screen), and a couple jingles. But gameplay-wise, I tried to keep it true to the original. Timing changes as the levels progress is not accurate to the original.

Another submission... Stay a while... stay forever.

This is another port of an old Atari and C64 game (and other platforms from the eighties), Squish'Em (AKA Squish'em Sam).

This project is almost at beta stage, all the sprites, logic and levels are in. 95% of the sfx/music is done.

In my todo list I have a bunch of ideas to juice the game up and add a bunch of new stuff to this classic game.

The current state of the port is quite faithful to the original apart from a very different way of managing player deaths. In the original game when the player is hit by a falling hazard or when colliding with an enemy, then the game restarts at a near level position after a brief cutscene where the player falls down the building. I hate this and decided to be creative and modern. In my port, the player loses a life when hit and turns invincible for a couple of seconds without breaks. Another small change I made is at level 16 which is one of the last levels with randomized enemies which also move faster than normal. In my port the game is endless after level 16 with enemies having increasing moving speed and shorter respawn times.

My first bbs submission, yay!

Been dabbing in game development for a couple of years with long breaks in-between. My current obsession is our beloved Picotron and my classic passion is retro-gaming, especially C64 and computers from the eighties.

This is a very early alpha of the C64 version of Necromancer by the late genius Bill Williams.
The sprites are placeholders.
The current codebase uses the great libraries hit.p8, locus.p8 and eggs.p8 from kikito as well as some of his older lua libraries (middleclass and stateful for OOP and game state).

In the current version of the cartridge I use eggs.p8 to manage game entities with several granular systems (moving, drawing, animating, resetting, colliding). locus.p8 and hit.p8 manage entity collisions.
