-> V7.0 Update. More enemies! More items! More graphics! More magic! More secrets! Less swamp!
-> V7.2 made duck more stompy

This is a PICO-8 homage to Atari 2600 Adventure. It's not just a nostalgia trip; I tried to make it a fun game in its own right.

The token counting has changed enough since I first wrote this that

  • You get one ship trip per game.
  • There's a way to cure the curse of slowness.
  • There's a way to open a gate without a key--once.

All I could think while playing was:
I gotta get this freakin' duck away from me!

P#12449 2015-08-07 23:15 ( Edited 2015-08-08 03:15)

So great.

P#12450 2015-08-07 23:23 ( Edited 2015-08-08 03:23)

This is so great! I have missed you, arrow sword! Amazing job on this.

P#12457 2015-08-08 01:09 ( Edited 2015-08-08 05:14)

If only the dang Curse ghosts don't teleport your items away!

Other than that, great game!

P#12462 2015-08-08 03:31 ( Edited 2015-08-08 07:31)

If you play on hardcore mode it's not a problem :D

Edit: less cheekily, yes the skeletons are easily the biggest jerks in the game. The swamp isn't so awful once you find the second exit--that can save you one or more trips through the skeleton room. And the whole purpose of the ship is to give you a one-time bypass that you decide when to use. And, while the sword doesn't kill them, it can affect them.

P#12463 2015-08-08 06:27 ( Edited 2015-08-08 15:48)

DUCK! Haha oh my god giant duck! This is incredible. Simply amazing.

P#12473 2015-08-08 12:34 ( Edited 2015-08-08 16:34)

The sword can push them away, yes, but they'll end up behind you and banishing your sword to oblivion, making the game harder for you.

P#12479 2015-08-08 16:30 ( Edited 2015-08-08 20:30)

Harvested some tokens and put on some polish.

  • Clouds and cutscenes for the ship and duck teleports.
  • An effect for the healing spring.
  • Utilized spare room. Maybe not as well as I'd liked to, but:
P#13672 2015-09-04 04:34 ( Edited 2015-09-04 08:34)

OK, the ship animation/sfx has got to be the best thing ever.

P#13689 2015-09-04 12:40 ( Edited 2015-09-04 16:40)

I love this game and the old school (2600) aesthetic. Strong.

P#13788 2015-09-07 13:36 ( Edited 2015-09-07 17:36)

It turns out since the last time I released this, some token calculation changes were made that freed up about 2000 tokens! I was able to add a lot of little things that I had wanted to do but just didn't have the tokens for.

My favorite addition is a purely cosmetic one inside the blue castle though.

P#30777 2016-10-12 15:52 ( Edited 2016-10-12 19:52)

WOW ! I didn't know there was an update to this. I love the SNOW sequence with the hidden ice monsters. There's a lot of creativity flowing from this game cart and it shows in every play !

P#30788 2016-10-12 18:49 ( Edited 2016-10-12 22:49)

What's the red key for? I can't find a red fortress.

Also the chalice is for the duck??

Very cool game. Perfect example for good design.

Looking at the tilemap, there is no use for the red key right?

P#31030 2016-10-16 07:38 ( Edited 2016-10-16 11:41)

Yes the chalice is for the yellow dragon (I'm not sure why people call it a duck???) Aka your mom. (Edit: I mean literally as in, the duck is yellow, you are yellow, your castle is yellow; you're on the same team.)

The red key is something of a red herring, but its uselessness has a use, if you understand the forest altar.

P#31090 2016-10-16 22:48 ( Edited 2016-10-17 05:16)

very nice take on Adventure with so many creative additions.. I will have to play through this one!

P#31097 2016-10-17 00:16 ( Edited 2016-10-17 04:16)

cheepicus, I have yet to beat this but I REALLY like it! My dad showed me "dungeons and dragons" on his intellivision, which I believe was a knock off the original Adventure.

I had trouble running this on my PocketCHIP. I eventually got it running, but it seems like, for some reason, PocketCHIP does not like conditionals being in Parentheses AND using THEN. For example

IF (NOT S) THEN -- causes error on PocketCHIP

This happens maybe 3 or 4 times in your code. I removed them and then it runs fine (besides some slowdown in the snow)

P#31112 2016-10-17 11:37 ( Edited 2016-10-17 15:37)

Thanks for the heads up paloblancogames. I went through cleaning up the IF statements. I don't have a PocketCHIP, so I can't test the changes I made. Let me know if the new version is still broken. And I hope I didn't mess anything else up.

As for Intellivision AD&D, to me it seems pretty directly inspired by Hunt the Wumpus. Exploring a cave by sound and blind-firing bouncy arrows is totally some wumpus huntin action. I wouldn't be surprised if Colossal Caves and Adventure's bat were inspired by Hunt the Wumpus, too.

P#31130 2016-10-17 19:48 ( Edited 2016-10-17 23:49)

damn that blue maze and its attacking blue things and the white things in the white castle! It was hard, but I finally won!

P#31139 2016-10-18 02:49 ( Edited 2016-10-18 06:49)

Lines 35, 76, and 1431 all still give the pocketCHIP some trouble for the same reason:

needs to be:

after those three lines it is pocketCHIP safe.

P#31231 2016-10-19 11:28 ( Edited 2016-10-19 15:28)

Hey ! Finally won the game. There's quite a bit of Legend Of Zelda in here too if you look. WOW ! What a big chalice, and ... nice big duck sits in it. I'm not cleaning up after that. Owell. :)

P#31239 2016-10-19 12:39 ( Edited 2016-10-22 02:16)

Hey, I created an account in Pico-8 just to tell you that I fucking love this fucking game, man.

Keep it up!

P#31373 2016-10-21 05:39 ( Edited 2016-10-21 09:39)

Thanks! Yes I do need to complete more games.

I wish I had more tokens for this one just so I could add some achievements like:

  • You killed the Nommer
  • You killed the white knights before you entered the white castle.
  • You stole the chalice without entering the white castle
  • You stunned all the ghosts
  • You used the red key
  • You opened a castle without a key
  • You won the game without using a key
P#31586 2016-10-23 18:01 ( Edited 2016-10-23 22:01)

It's supposed to be there but it is also supposed to go somewhere else!

P#54164 2018-07-14 13:32 ( Edited 2018-07-14 17:32)

Fun game, although I would like a list that shows each item and explains their use, I.E the magnet.

P#92295 2021-05-21 18:32

There's not that many items!

KEY - Opens gate of corresponding castle.
YELLOW SWORD - Kills weak enemies, stuns medium enemies.
MAGNET - Pulls closest item frome same screen.
SHIELD - Proof against arrows, at least.

MAGIC FOREST ALTAR - Enchants anything, once!
MAGIC SWORD - Kills anything! Once...
MAGIC MAGNET - Pulls closest item.
MAGIC KEY - Opens any gate.

P#103046 2021-12-18 02:41

Confusing at first, but fun if you know what to do.

P#105368 2022-01-19 15:29

That duck was camping the blue key I accidently dropped and I had so much stress trying to get it back o_ o
Even though I didn't get very far it's certainly a unique game

P#105396 2022-01-20 01:58

How do I open the yellow castle without a key? I tried getting the duck to smash it down but the duck respects it too much.

Bonus Tip:

There's a way to use the enchantment table twice

P#119239 2022-10-18 04:20

Should be possible now.
