Hack all the terminals and defeat the boss.
This is my attempt at making a polished game in a week and a half, although it ended up being 2 weeks. I had to drop a few features I wanted to put in due to time, and code ended up getting a bit messy. Still, I'm pretty happy with how it came out.
The frame rate can drop sometimes, particularly in the later parts of the game when there are a lot of enemies around.
UPDATE
Removed a tiny amount of unused code and added as many comments as I could fit without going over compressed size.
UPDATE 2
Added the ability to swap jump and shoot buttons because the defaults felt awkward in gamepad. Also fixed a couple of minor audio bugs.

I mean... WOW. 👏🤩
I grew up loving Turrican II on the Amiga, and this scratches that itch too.
Excellent art, great sound, tough as nails.
This is now one of the best platformers on the console.

The game is legit, 100%. But I think there should be an option to reverse the buttons (shoot/jump). To me, it feels like they're backwards, and I can't really play it well as-is.

@BitwiseCreative, since you have Pico-8 yourself as seen from your successful button test program, in the main Pico-8 program, load up this game with:
load #xzero |
Then in immediate mode type out KEYCONFIG and ENTER. Configure the keyboard the way you would like and RUN the game from there.

Hey @paranoidcactus. I went onto ArcadePreHAcks and I saw that your game has been uploaded with out your permission. Much love, Rimuru.

fun game. I found a little bug, after

Insanley great game. The music is cool and creepy, the art looks like it has a lot more than 16 colors, and the gameplay was exelent. You have done it again, @paranoidcactus Here's my gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3xgOVlYhF8

If you die against the boss and then select "End Game", the boss will actually spawn offscreen and continue to attack (the laser can pierce through walls) and the healthbar will still display. The view also does not center when this happens.

wow! this game runs so smoothly and movement feels fluid. the map system and hacking objectives were clear and easy to understand. i loved the little scrambling effect during the hack action! and your music is superb, strongly reminiscent of action titles from the 16-bit era. thank you for sharing this, so fun!

Hello, great game, I loved the ambiance and the music. I loved the gameplay and the versatile playability. Is there a kind of a second run or new game + ? After defeating the boss I had a different mode without map, different scrolling and the gauge of the boss was still there ;-)

First off, incredible and gorgeous game!
Once my friend beat it and started over a sfx was on loop and the minimap was gone.

Here's my all-clear no-miss (no lives lost) run:
Might go for a no-hit run next.
Would be nice to see this game expanded upon as a multi-cart with more stages, enemies, and bosses.

Great work! I had a little too much trouble with the enemies but I am playing on a phone browser. I will have to try again with an actual gamepad. Looking forward to beating this one!

Great. The best part is when you backtrack and the enemies you just cleared respawn in your face.

You made this in 2 weeks?! Dang, I plugged away at my project for months and only barely eked out something playable... Bravo sir! I found a bug, though: After you defeat the boss, head back to the title and start a new game there is a ear piercing screeching sound. The level now scrolls a screen at a time, and if you die the boss' health bar shows at the bottom of the screen and his laser can get you from out of nowhere...

I love this game, it's got ParanoidCactus' usual high level of polish of course. The platforming and shooting is really fun, I really like the way aiming works compared to how other games usually do aiming. The way the level randomisation works with large prefab map tiles is really cool, definitely an approach I'd be happy ripping off. Really cool game.
