My FIRST Pico-8 Video Game!

I have only made 2 games before this, both on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum line of computers and both part of my CLOUD PEOPLE world I came up with back in the 1980s on my then Atari 800 in 1980.

Fast forward to 2018 I decided to make my 1st game as I never did one back in the 1980s as Hot Girls and Fast Cars became a thing for me. haha. In 2018 I made Invasion Of The Cloud People for the Speccy 48 and then in 2021 Invasion Of The Cloud People - The Next Storm for the Speccy Next.

Now my 1st go at making a game for Pico-8.

I hope folks enjoy my little tiny game. Here is a 4 Level Demo to get the juices flowing and hope in the end I can make this a 10 level game. All about the natural elements like Tornados and Lightning, the Cloud People are ruthless and sending all sorts of havoc on us.

Peeko-8, our trusty pilot, is sent on an adventure to collect some good raindrops as those darn Cloud People are turning most rain into Acid Rain! On his journey Peeko-8 also has an infatuation with POKEY-HOLES! Yeh you read that right, innuendo and all, but he must appease his appetite for juicy Pokey-Holes along the way.

Come Bob & Weave the Nasties and collect good Raindrops along the way so portals between Cloud Layers come up on each level. But don't be late for those portals as they will leave without you and the Party Is Over if they do!

Battle the Boss Cloud Person on Level 4 and blast him with your lasers! (Lasers only work against Boss Nasties)

Just 4 hair raising levels with Easy & Hard Modes. See how well or poorly you do.

Let me know what ya think and if ya like it, I should eventually add more levelsn to this hopefully addictive video game.

The intro screen has all the info so read it all and then give it a go.

Thanks for playing!

TJ

** For those following along, I made a video explaining myself (haha) and what why and when I started making this game and play it as well in this video showing you how I defeat the Cloud People... Or I mean Peeko-8 Does!

Is it a bad thing to build a game out of an interesting menu screen?

I was struck with inspiration to make this... but not really sure where to go from there.

Winter is here, which means that the christmas markets are popping up everywhere. Time to get to work! You are famous for your mixology of hot drinks. This fame has allowed you to make enough profit to make donations to programs for your community.

What is your job?

Can you sell enough perfectly mixed hot drinks on the Christmas market to provide money for the people and cats in need?

Controls

Arrows - Move
X - Interact
O - View Drink Menu / Toss a full drink

Credits

Thank you to all the lovely folks from the PICO-8 advent calendar for playtesting feedback and your excellent games! And extraspecial thanks to bikibird and Kevin for organizing the calendar and putting together such talented developers!

This is a simple fork of Pico Factory that lets you pause time.

Of course, items will not be produced or sold while time is paused.

Controls

You can pause / unpause time in two ways:

  • press ❎ on player 2 controller (Q or A on the keyboard);
  • select toggle pause in the menu.

The latter is your only option if you are playing on mobile or handheld.

Disclaimer

This fork writes pause edition on the top of the board.

This will be visible in any screenshots (even while the graph is being displayed), so it will be clear that the score was not obtained on the original cart.

Decided to dip my toes into the world of picotron. I'm still pretty much lost, but I made a small thing:

Cart #suntan_wallpaper-0 | 2025-12-05 | Embed ▽ | License: CC4-BY-NC-SA

What is this?

This is a programmatic wallpaper. You may have noticed that picotron's wallpapers can be full carts, which are executed in the wallpaper window. Inspired by the "birds" program, I tried to make a wallpaper that interacted with the windows.

Whenever you open a window, a "shadow" is made under that window. The longer the shadow lives, the "darker" it gets. When you move or resize a window, the shadow will quickly die, becoming lighter in the process.

The idea is to kinda simulate the windows leaving marks on the background. The marks respect the theme's colors.

Following the storm of the century, you're stuck inside and the only way out is your shovel! But beware, slipping on any ice could cost you.

Controls:

-Arrows move your little guy around.

  • Press X to jump over a square in whichever direction you happen to be facing.
  • Hold O(Z on computer) and press arrows to change the players direction without moving forward.
  • Use arrows and X to navigate the menu.

This game was inspired by a gym puzzle in Pokemon ruby where there's a similar concept just without the jumping part.

I don't seem to be able to upload images to the forums, or at least preview them.

Here's an example:

([ img]/media/37618/68_analog_3.png[/img])

I posted an image there but I'm not seeing it visible. My older images on forum posts are still visible, but a recent unlisted post seems to have same issue of invisible images. I could see them when I was editing the post a couple of weeks ago though.

Have I reached a limit or something else?

Dodge the elves to gain points with the arrow keys and survive as long as you can!

This is my first submission for the Pico-8 2025 Advent Calendar. Please enjoy!

How do I move my unlisted game to the public forum? While editing it I clicked on 'Move to public forum' but I'm not sure if it did anything.

I struggled to figure out how to save my cart locally as I worked on it and also how to make it a directory (as opposed to a cart) so that I could better version track changes to it via git. If that's something you're trying to do, I hope this helps.

Setting up Picotron to work with your host machine (a Mac) as preparation for version control

  1. Navigate to /Users/{username}/Library/Application Support. This is where Picotron normally stores its data on the host machine.
  2. Find the picotron_config.txt file and change where it stores data from hereon in:

Comment out the original path and add where you'd like to store your repository on your host machine.

# picotron config

# mount / /Users/{username}/Library/Application Support/Picotron/drive
mount / /Users/{username}/repos/picotron_stuff

Then restart Picotron.

  1. In the repo directory on your host machine, create a directory for the new cart you will want to create. Creating a directory first in the host system is important because if you create it in Picotron, the host machine wouldn't treat it as a directory. (Or at least that was my experience).

It would be nice to have a way to patch system processes and files that are run before /appdata/system/startup.lua is run, for processes like wm, and the default workspaces. My suggestion is to add a /appdata/system/patch.lua, which is run inside boot.lua before any other processes are created. It would be a safer way that making the system folder persistent, as it could still be bypassed like with startup.lua, but it would allow for things like creating custom patches for the editors and such.
