I took the retro space game aspect in a different direction by looking towards space invaders but simplified the concept to having the enemies coming at you, like Galaga. The game uses a few states, the title, the game, and the game over state. It will cycle through all three, with the game over state triggering if the player reaches zero health, and the title retriggering after the game over state while also showing your high score so far. I tried to emulate the drift-esque movement of a space ship, by having the values of one direction go up as you push one direction and then go down as time goes on or goes faster if the opposite direction is pushed. It didn’t quite work the way I wanted and is the thing that I think needs the most revision.
If anyone else is reading this and is getting started with Pico 8, I would definitely try something like this or any simple top down game first. Platformers have a lot more physics elements to balance when making them, and something like pong will have some intimidating math for the ball bouncing (as silly as that sounds). I also would say to not use rectfill for your sprites, I was coming off p5js and that was the easier option for me there. It was also easier to focus on the game that way, but it actually strains the engine more and can cause flickering. I would definitely just make super simple sprites to start off with, or just get some online as there are a lot of free packs to choose from.

You wake in a shifting maze that should not exist. Endless corridors, a low hum that follows you.
Each turn leads deeper into something that feels alive. Notes left by those who came before hint at a presence they could never describe.
Find the heart of the labyrinth and learn what has been waiting there all along.
This is my submission to HORRORJAM 2025.
v1.04 Inventory no longer gets in the way of the minimap, adjusted energy drain rate.

Very barebones cartridge unpacker (p64 to real folder)
If interested, stuff like gfx > png, map > something idk, sfx > something idk could be setup (with people's help likely, idk much </3)

The ultimate bovine space program. Tired of being reduced to a nursery rhyme punchline, one cow is determined to make the jump, even if it means building a rocket from barnyard scraps.
Inspired by classic launcher games like Learn to Fly; launch, earn, and upgrade your rocket in a bid to jump the moon.

Over The Moon was written and designed by Ross McCormick.

WELCOME TO JETPENG
You are a penguin with a jetpack. Your mission is to save some baby penguins that are falling from the frozen ceiling. Catch them and bring them back home. Don't touch the falling spikes or the spikes on the edges of the screen. And: DON'T MAKE HER ANGRY!
HOW TO PLAY
Use left and right to go left and right. Use X to activate the jetpack. After you caught a baby, fly to the ladder. Repeat.
If you beat the normal mode you unlock two endless modes.
HOW IT WAS MADE

Hi everyone! I'm sharing my first game on PICO-8 — Ambush Sub.
It's a simple clone of arcade cabinets like Sea Devil and Torpedo Launcher. You are the captain of a submarine, and your goal is to sink enemy ships.
How to play:
Objective: Destroy 8 ships and 1 submarine.
Ammo: You have 10 torpedoes.
Second chance: You can miss once — there is 1 spare torpedo for that!
Controls:
←/→ — move the periscope, X — fire.
Thanks for checking it out!

Hi all, here is our third Pico-8 game, the followup to our last, titled Jump Correctly: The Lost Program. Even more challenging than the base game, The Lost Program is a kaizo-inspired puzzle platformer set across 30 new levels, and with an all new soundtrack. We cannot stress enough, this game is HARD. Playing with a game pad is definitely recommended. As always, all feedback is welcome, and we hope you enjoy.
Please see the itch page for controls and the youtube trailer.

Sp I've been poking around with Pico-8 again, and I decided to make a mod of this snake game:
Credit to user TheVoid.
I am trying to mess around with modding simple carts to figure out some game dev/programming basics and so far I have changed around the appearance of the fruits. It was bothering me in the original cart how sometimes a fruit would spawn over the current score, so I started messing around with the playfield border. It looks right (well the colors might be a bit strange, it was to help me find out in the original code which line was which), and the snake dies when it hits the border appropriately.
However, the fruits are still spawning outside of the new playfield. You may need to play this for a minute, but you should see pretty quickly that they are spawning to the left:

How to Play
Not much to do right now, use the arrow keys to dodge the red circles. Press X to use up energy (this will be used for super powers later). You get about .3 seconds of invincibility if you touch a red circle, while losing 10 HP. When your HP goes out, u dead. Also if you want to change the difficulty you can go into the code and change the enemy spawn rate/ speed in tab 3.
