Steps is a small Minit-like game where instead of dying from time, you die after a certain amount of steps. Explore the cursed island, solve puzzles, and find the hidden coins. Try to run away from the island by finding the Icarus wings as it is the only way to escape the cursed island.

Controls:

  • Arrows: to move around
  • X: to start the game and activate boots

Tips:

  • Try to find different patterns to find secrets (notice different patterns, different wall tiling)
  • Try to find the torch before entering dark dungeons
  • Some walls are just fake walls where you can walk through them.
  • Be careful when using boots in the dark dungeons

Pretty fun game! I preferred this gameplay to Minit's because it was a lot less stressful.

I only found three coins: in the space to the left of the starting area (standing on the flowers for a while activates it), pushing the two barrels into the corners, and in the walls of the final cave. If anyone finds the last one, congrats!

Glad you enjoyed it :) the fourth one is in the initial start location :)

Oh, that's devious! I found it, but it's worth mentioning that if you mess up there then you can't unlock it. It might be good to reset the room if it's not done properly.

I know, same as the sokoban one, I didn't want to add the button so it doesnt look obvious as it is a secret :)

Really cool idea. I like the lo-fi look.

Thanks a lot :) glad you liked it :)

I loved Minit, and I loved this game! Great job!

Glad you enjoyed it :)

I really liked this a lot; from the lo-fi look to the clever variation on Minit's core mechanic.

I liked it so much, I made a video of it for my channel here: https://youtu.be/oGEc2OwkyQg

Thanks so much for letting me know, I am glad you enjoyed the game :) I will check the video :)

Very well crafted - though I did not understand how to push barrels (?).
Does it need a special ability??

Yup, there is a glove ability later in the game where it will allow you to push them :)

Cool!

Thanks a lot :)

that is a pretty smart mechanic, also have you zoomed it in because it looks kind of zoomed in?

Thanks a lot :) I wanted the zoomed-in because it makes 10 moves spawn between multiple screens :)

thanks @amidos2006 - finished game! (no coins 🙄)

YaaaaaY, Glad you finished the game. Sorry that you couldn't find the coins, they are pretty well hidden and I am sorry if they are very hard to find :)

I LOVED it! Thank you for sharing with us!

Thanks mac :) I am glad you enjoyed it :)

Just started with P8 and tried this. Really clever and well made, fun to boot!

thanks a lot :)

I liked it, but I didn't find any coins. I found some secret passages, but obviously not all. It was well-designed, with some cool progression in such a limited time/space. Well done!

The coins are well hidden with weird puzzles to get all of them :) I am glad that you liked the game :)

Brilliant game! Loved ever second of it!

I see you got a lot of inspiration from Minit, great game.

Thanks mhughson and pincel, I am glad you both enjoyed it :) Yup it is inspired by minit :)

I love this game! Your game design inspired me a lot!

Thanks a lot :)

what are the extra sprites for?

was for potential other ideas and testing early on in the development :)

@amidos2006, this cart is simply awesome on all levels and quite challenging besides. Proof that the mechanics behind a game will always be more important than graphics or audio. Gold star work.

Thank you so much :)

Thanks, nice selection of colors :)

I played mint - and i don't like it, I always died, hadn't really a goal, doesn't know where to go.

Your version solved every problem, that I had mit minit. It worked instant.

But I really prever the colored version :)

You should think about a bigger version, but keep the size of the "Island" like in here, more add stages. When they got to big, it is only confusing.

I am glad that you enjoyed my game :) I think I might consider doing a bigger version at some point in the future as I never expected that game to do that well in the first place :)

Again thank you so much for playing the game :)

But maybe the start should be a little diffrent. I would suggest a small floor and a pole at the end, so the user must go to the floor und must touch the pole. So it is easier to understand that poles are very important.
Also when steps are 2 or lower, it should switch color/blink. maybe the sprite "perspire" little bit to indicate that something happen. A simple small tutorial section. Everything else was easy to understand.

Thanks for the suggestions :) I think they will be good for a bigger size game :)

It’s an amazing game! Looks like ZX81 best games (especially Mazogs)! It would be great if you made a version for this legendary computer!

Thank you so much, glad u liked it :) a friend managed to port the game to the ZX81 (https://bobs-stuff.itch.io/steps). Enjoy the game on the console :)

Wow ! Great news ! Thank you so much !

If you like puzzle games you will like this
also I really like the Art style :)

Glad you enjoyed it :)

I just finished it and liked it a lot!
Great little game !
I discover the pico-8 in the same time, and find it great (and bought it!)

Thanks a lot :) I am happy that enjoyed it and got pico-8 too :)

@amidos2006
Finally got the 4 coins, thanks to looking at the source code. How were we supposed to know about the "cut 2 cactusses but not the others" one ??? Was there a hint ?
Anyway, I'd like to port this game to the antiquated aquarius computer.
It was an absolutly terrible computer for its time, but it's still dear to my heart. the "video chip" if you can call it that is just text mode with color attributes. Still there are characters to do the 2x2 bloxels trick like with the zx81, only worse because you have to swap the color attributes depending on the bloxel pattern you need.
Nevertheless, I think a color version of steps is possible, and that would be one of the very best games for the machine.

@RealShadowCaster

Sorry about the hidden stuff, I thought it might be noticeable based on the pattern similarity. But it might have not been that clear.

Feel free to port it to the aquarius computer :) Someone ported it to ZX81 and it looked amazing :) I am always happy to see these projects
https://bobs-stuff.itch.io/steps

I think someone also made a colored version (the only color that I don't agree with is the second upgrade as it is supposed to be a flame and not a bomb).

Let me know if you manage to port it :)
