Been thinking about this for a bit and figured I’d throw it out there as a general discussion.

I’ve noticed a lot of demakes and retro-style projects lately (which is awesome), but some of them are using original sprites, cover art, or straight-up the same characters/names from old games.

Usually with a note like “fan-made”, “non-commercial”, or “no infringement intended”.

Thing is though — that kind of disclaimer doesn’t really change anything legally. Same with slapping a Creative Commons license on it, you can’t really license stuff you don’t own.

Not trying to be a downer or call anyone out, just seems like one of those things a lot of people (especially newer devs) might not realize.

There’s a pretty clear difference between:

recreating a game or taking inspiration from it
vs copying the actual assets and redistributing them

And yeah, most of the time nothing happens… but it can, and it’s probably better people know where that line is.

Flappy Bird Clone game, still learning Pico-8. This is a little rough around the edges, but I wanted to complete this so I could move onto something new :3 yay!

A project without a direction yet. Just a cylindrical world renderer, sprite stack "voxel" 3D objects, prototype NPCs and a lot of sweat poured into making it work.

My take on the classic.

I made this after a year-long hiatus from my first game. To get back into it, I challenged myself to build an entire game only using the 'HELP' manual docs. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and had fun discovering techniques along the way.

My biggest challenge has been tuning the collision detection. I think there must be a better way, because my approach feels extremely mushy and sometimes feels off.

My first pico 8 game about a frog. That’s pretty much it. Enjoy!

inspired by https://freeradical.zone/@bitartbot i decided to mess with bitwise operators a bit. add in some T() and you get this. probably the most entertaining way to watch a two minute binary counter.

the *1.1 is only there so that the whole loop fits in the PICO-8 gif recording limit of 120 seconds. i need 128 seconds dammit!

also just noticed that the gif uses the incorrect version where a pixel is chopped off of the right and bottom edges of the screen. too bad!

Prognosis Negative

A basic arcade shooter. More bullets on-screen at a time awards higher scores.

Purpose

This is a project to get back into PICO-8 development before I take another swing at my last project, Coalesce.

Sources

v1.0.0

Base game is ready.

Updates

  • Strafe works in all directions
  • Health pickups added
  • Different pixel-art on title screen

Future ideas

  • Title screen could use more love.
  • Screen shake sometimes affects border visibility on right side

What?

Shakeleste is Celeste with entirely too much screenshake.

Why?

This mod is intended both as a goofy art piece, and as an example of how not to make a game, in the spirit of Game Over: Because No One Can Save the Universe.

Features

  • Jumping causes screenshake.
  • Walljumping causes screenshake.
  • Dashing causes screenshake that gets worse with each level.
  • Failed dashes cause screenshake.
  • Recharging your dash causes screenshake.
  • Collecting strawberries causes screenshake.
  • Angering strawberries causes screenshake, too.
  • Springs cause random amounts of screenshake.

CURSORS.P8

a little thing i wrote a long time ago, intended for a tweetcart but never quite small enough. through the power of postcart having a slightly higher character limit, i can post it here now!

and yes, you get your own cursor :)

i'm reminded of a hard-to-source quote that goes something like "when i wrote this, only god and I knew what it meant. now only god knows". i remember that there's a lot of fancy stuff going on here like reusing the sprite decoding loop to create the objects, overriding the global table when iterating, and using weird constants to save a handful of characters. but as for exactly how it all comes together, i haven't a clue.

this was my first time using a sprite in a sizecoded cart, it was fun. i think i remember writing my own encoder for it

(294 chars)

pal(2,7)poke(14-😐,1)l=64p={}for i=0,40do
add(p,{n=l,m=l,x=l,y=l,t=rnd(64),r=rnd})b=ord("\4…\1i…¥た∧◀⬆️a",i\4+1)sset(8+i%6,i\6,(b>>((i%4)*2))&3)end::♥::cls()for _𝘦𝘯𝘷 in all(p)do
t-=2
if(t<0)x=n y=m n=r(128)m=r(128)t=64
g=(t/64)^2h=1-g
spr(1,n*h+x*g,m*h+y*g)end
spr(1,stat(32),stat(33))flip()goto ♥

A roguelike ball-dropping, peg-popping arcade game!

Pop pegs on randomly-generated pegboards which get more complex as you progress!
Earn coins and buy upgrades in the shop!
Be strategic: if you run out of balls before popping all the pegs, your run will end!

CONTROLS

L and R to adjust ball drop position
X to drop

PEGS

NORMAL PEGS

Will pop when hit once

GOLDEN PEGS

Will give $1 in addition to score when hit

HARD PEGS

Take multiple hits to pop (the higher the round, the more hits they take)

SAVE PEGS

Restore a shot taken previously for this round (tip: try to hit this peg on the second shot or later)

Hello everyone.
I'm looking for a way to to 2D AND 3D in the same fantasy console.
I've heard Voxatron can handle this, but I'm not sure, and I'd like to know BEFORE buying.

So, please, can you recommend reliable ways to do both, 2D AND 3D?

In example, with PicoCAD and Pico-8, or the like.
Any working combination would do.

Thanks in advance for any kind of support.
Regards, have a nice day.

Kindly, Ivano.

I made this game by following the Nerdy Teachers Bite-Sized Game Fruit Drop tutorial on YouTube. I cannot recommend their content enough. Their website looks awesome and they have, in my opinion, the best content for people just starting out with pico-8. I added a tree in the background and sprinting as a way to get more practice with game development. It was extremely fun and I can't wait to learn more. I would include a link to the video but I don't know if that's allowed.

me.

a tiny companion.

what

me. is a small creature that lives on your screen. it has four needs:
hunger, fun, energy, love. you press buttons. me. reacts.

it is a tamagotchi in shape, but not in spirit.

what me. actually is, is closer to a face that breathes. a body that
gets tired. eyes that look away when sad. eyes that find yours when
trust has built up over time. a mouth that quivers before something
real happens.

if you ignore me. for too long, me. will get hungry. then sad. then
desperate. then me. will die, and the death will be unlike anything
you have seen in a tamagotchi-shaped game.
