BIC – Binary Image Creator

by stryck

this project is OpenSource and free, use it as you want just credit me or this page like "original project : " <3

mouse enabled

BIC (Binary Image Creator) is a small creative tool/game where you build pixel images entirely from binary data.

Instead of drawing pixels directly, you define an image using bits (0 and 1):

  • The first bits describe the image width

  • The next bits describe the image height

  • The remaining bits represent the pixel data

This turns pixel art into a playful exploration of binary logic, data representation, and creativity.

How it works

  • Edit bits on the left panel

  • Instantly see the resulting image on the right

  • Switch to display mode to view the final pixel output

  • Experiment with different binary configurations to discover unexpected shapes

BIC is part toy, part editor, part educational experiment.

I'm working on a virtual 8-bit CPU within PICO-8, loosely inspired by the 6502 processor. It's an in-progress fulfillment of my dream to type assembly language instructions at a command prompt and execute them immediately by pressing Enter... hence the "REPL" (read-evaluate-print loop) in "REPL Assembler."

... Yeah, I have strange dreams.

Since PICO-8 doesn't have an assembly language, I'm creating my own. And what's a fantasy assembly language without a fantasy virtual machine to run it...

In the cartridge at the top of this post, I've implemented only the eight CPU instructions I needed to make a Hello World program. Here's a GIF of me pasting in my hand-assembled Hello World program as decimal machine code and running it:

This is my first attempt at a game, please be kind!

Game Summary

You play as Belle, a diver who has landed herself in some pretty deep waters! Ascend back up to her diving bell to get her back to safety by jumping on jellyfish and managing your oxygen!

The bar at the bottom of the screen is Belle's oxygen, make your way over to the bubbles coming from the ground to fill it back up.
Don't take too long jumping from platform to platform, or she will be sleeping with the fishes.

Controls

The controls are simple, Z to jump and arrow keys to move, if you happen to drown or take a bath in some spikes, you can press X to respawn.

Hello there!

This is my first Pico8 game (and my first game in general). The code is definitely a mess, and the game could probably use some balance adjustments and more features, buuuut it's playable! (I think)

Lore

Guide a young sorceress on her quest to explore a mysterious maze full of solars - valuable crystals that emit the energy of the sun.

Be mindful of spikes - whoever designed this maze really enjoyed putting them everywhere ;)

How to Play:

  • Use arrows to move.
  • Hold button O (c or z on keyboard) to see how many solars you've collected, your current health and remaining time limit.
  • Watch out for spikes.

Come in and serve drinks to cute cowboy platypuses!

Description
This is my first game ever and I want to document the start of my journey. This project is part of may masters programme and had following restrictions:

  • use Pico 8
  • make a game about a random generated title
  • work alone
  • no AI
  • 2 week deadline

My random title was Ye Olde Platypus Saloon and since I am a fresh beginner I tried to make something small. I had instantly the vision of a simple serving game, but to my surprise it was not easy to find tutorials or something. So I did my best to make it work and programmed a lot of unnecessary code in the first week. For example I defined each customer, their location and mechanic seperatly. The second week I reworked my code to make the appearing customers random and get the code more efficient.

Take a spin with this one-button game!

Hello,
this is my 2nd Game on my Game Dev journey and a project in my masters programme.

We had a few restrictions for this:

  • only one button control
  • game theme based on a random generated noun
  • Pico 8
  • one week deadline
  • work alone
  • no AI

So my noun was "cell" and I wanted to create a one-button game with a focus on movement combining with a narrative. One of my big inspirations was the casual game Bauhaus Bonk and I tried to recreate their unique spinbased movement controls.

The noob I am, my code is pretty bad and screams beginner. For example I didn't use object arrays or sinus stuff. I know now this would make it a lot easier and cleaner. But I worked within my limits and learn step by step :)

EDIT: Had to change left and right, after testing with several people and everybody expecting it reversed

Fill up bottles and watch the numbers go up. So far has no lose/win condition. Can be played endlessly, if you're fast enough! Updated difficulty and sounds.

I drew two sprites by two different way.
1:

camera(cx)
spr(1,x,40)

2:

camera()
spr(1,x-cx,48)

They should be plotted on the same horizontal coordinate. But sometimes they may be off by a pixel. I am really confused.

Here is the cartridge:

The animals of the Wild Wood are short on gifts this year. In a last-ditch effort to save Winter Solstice, they open a portal to the Gift Dimension and send their bravest explorer, Bouncy the Rat, to salvage what gifts she can find.
