I wrote this little game with my niece and nephews, to show them how games are made.
My nephew said he thought it'd be all much easier...

Use the arrow keys to steer the ship.
Use X to spawn green slimey tentacle aliens.
Use Z to fire a space rocket at them.

SAFE THE UNIVERSE! DO IT! NOW!!!

I was kinda nnoyed that I didnt get everything finished in time for the jam so I added a few improvements - off competition - just while I am still in the swing of it.

Changes:

  • second mighty enemy type "saw robot"
  • improved background parallax scrolling
  • graphic overhaul, cleaned up the pixly mess a bit

Still missing the actual story point and a bit of an extended level.

How to play

Left/Right - walking
Up - Jumping
X - run/hang/slide down
Y - shoot (if you have collected energy balls)

How to jump really high?
You walk left/right with the cursors.
Up lets you jump (up right/left)

if you press X while walking you will run!
If you jump against a wall running and hold X, you will cling to the wall (slowly sliding down).
From that you can jump again to flip flop up a higher ridge.

I had a little more time for the second jam and made a platformer called Unchain.

Collect all the golden chain segments and make your way to the exit.
Avoid the robotnics at all cost! Maybe you find some blue energeticon balls, to blast them into bits.

Capture the flag to mark a safe point.

Left/Right - walking
Up - Jumping
X - run/hang/slide down
Y - shoot

It takes a bit of practice to master the jump/hang/jump again. Like in the real world!

Really wanted to make something out of the basecode I wrote for fanzine #2.
There is plenty of things to add, better in game music, more types of robots and the cage with the princess (that needs all the chain pieces to abseil her from the ceiling)!
Well, I might get to that at a later point.

I didn't have much time this week, but really wanted to do something for the first pico8 jam.
So here it is an hour later... Rain.

Justlaunch the cart, put headphones on, lean back, close your eyes and think of something utterly relaxing!

This is a reimplementation of a little graphic demo I first saw in the early 90ies on an Amiga500.
I have been writing that kind of demo on pretty much every platform I ever coded with since then.

Was good to see that something like that is possible on pico8 as well. Funnily enough, I pretty much ran into the same bugs, colour mixing issues and performance bottle necks as any other time I wrote a bouncy ball.

Simple raytracer for Pico8. Performance is a bit meh, but all the calculations take their toll.
Buttons don't do anything. It just calculates a picture in about 2 seconds.
I'm using a manual defined gradient for luma mapping.

Have not optimized anything and am not doing shadow rays/ secondary rays at the moment.

Aiming to get something like a classic Cornell box in the end.

Fight against wave after wave of hostile alien space droids to protect galaxy command from an invasion.

New Features:

  • three different enemy types with individual behaviour
  • added a shield to the ship, that recharges over time
  • balanced the difficulty (made it a bit harder, since you have a shield now)
