Thought of this today while I was on a hike
I thought it might be cool to teach a class on making games with PICO-8
The first theme I thought of was "making games with math" and this was the result
My record is 5.9667
It started off fun and what I think could be accessible to even newbie programmers, but things got a little too complicated when I needed the "aimer" to "shoot"
The bullet (yes, singular bullet, that never despawns, just hides) and the targets might be a bit too advanced. I tried using simple syntax but that ended up being confusing (and I kept getting way too many syntax errors grrrr). If I were to stuff this into an intro course, I would probably just do it the advanced way or dumb the game down
Hey everyone! 👋
I’m an Italian YouTuber who makes videos about videogame culture and design.
A few days ago I challenged myself to create a small game completely from scratch in 48 hours, without using any AI or external tools — just PICO-8.
The result is Pac-Yes-Man, a tiny clone-experiment inspired by the classic Pac-Man.
It’s a personal project made mainly to learn how game logic, collisions and simple AI behaviors work — and to share that process in a video about understanding games by making them.
If you want to give it a try, you can play it directly in your browser below.
Feedback, tips and ideas are absolutely welcome — I’m still learning! 😊

I made this Worms demake a couple of years ago.
Due to the complexity of the game's controls, it was hard to do with PICO's 6 buttons but:
- < and > to move your worm
- ^ and v to change weapon
- X: jump
- hold X for 1 second to toggle zoomed-out view for overview
- while holding Z you're in shooting mode:
- ^ and v to aim your current weapon
- hold X to build up shooting power, let go at the desired power to shoot
Only the 1st level is made, you can make up to 8 in the level editor if you want. I probably intended to generate them, but I never got to that, apparently.
enjoy
Instructions
Quickly sort your warehouse and send out orders before time runs out! Try not to get overwhelmed by incoming deliveries!
Take deliveries from the left and send out orders on the right. The space in-between can be used to sort out boxes. More points are awarded for quicker, consecutive deliveries. Sending out orders fast will award you hammers to use in breaktime.
⬅️/➡️ - Move
⬇️ - Take box
⬆️ - Place box
🅾️ - Take group of boxes
❎ - Place group of boxes
If you're having issues with the d-pad on mobile, try turning on 'd-pad assist' in the pause menu.
Breaktime

Harmonic motion is one of my favorite topics in differential equations because of the close connections between our intuition and what the mathematics tells us. And probably the coolest aspect of that topic is resonance, the idea that if you drive the system at just the right frequency you'll get more amplitude out than you put in. Every child who's pumped their legs on a swing understands this intuitively, but it's also the phenomenon behind bridge collapses and singing bowls.
Very excited to release my first game ever! Dithered Out
Controls
x to jump
c to switch worlds
arrow keys to move
The Game
You are a little guy with the capability to switch between two worlds. With the knowledge you gain between both worlds, you must pass through 10 levels to reach the end!
Note: your stats are shown at the end of your run, try to beat your time! Or, how few jumps can you beat the game in?
My stats:
Fastest time - 0:46
Fewest jumps - 61
Fewest deaths - 0 (duh)
About
I wanted to release a game, so I gave myself around two weeks to learn PICO-8 and make whatever came to mind.

v1.0:
Hello, first post here. I bought Pico-8 a few months ago and this is the first thing I started working on.
Got stuck for a while, got some motivation on Reddit which helped me very much to get it to this stage I feel comfortable releasing.
It has:
- Chess and Chess960
- PvP or a Computer opponent (quite a weak one)
- Full match notation with the option to revert to any point in the match
- PGN and FEN export
This is quite a big thing for me, because I am actually publishing a personal project after a long time instead of just starting something interesting and then letting it rot in my Projects folder half-finished and forgotten.
It is not perfect; there are some known issues, animations are janky, computer engine is slow and weak... But this is what it is for now.
Run is a game about escaping an airport while a mad man with a lit match tries to explode you after strapping a bomb to you. Survive 3 levels of dodging obstacles to win.
Story
You fell asleep in a chair at the airport...
You are awakened by a man strapping a band of explosives around you!
He smiles at you, then lights a match...
Run.
Controls:
Mobile: Use on screen controls
Desktop: Arrow keys to select menus, 'z' or 'c' or 'n' for O button, 'x' or 'v' or 'm' for X button.
Dev Notes
This is my second Pico-8 game. Thanks for checking it out and for any feedback, which is much appreciated!
