Snekburd is a Pico-8 demake of Snakebird, by Noumenon Games, with new puzzles and mechanics! Navigate the snakebirds to eat all the fruit and head through the portal to complete the levels on each island. The first island's levels should serve as a quick tutorial to new players or a refresher for returning ones. The game featues about 70 levels, ranging from a little tricky to absurdly hard. Of course, if you haven't played the original Snakebird games, I highly recommend them. Especially Snakebird Primer if you find this demake too difficult.
Controls
- arrow keys : move
- Z/C : undo
- X/V : switch control
- Z/C/X/V : select level
The pause menu contains extra options for enabling a grid, resetting/exiting the level, and disabling just the music.
Testers
- Karoo13
- Tuure
- Pancelor
- Squidlight
- LokiStriker
I've also uploaded the game to itch.io. It has a sweet design as well as an additional option for a more subtle grid.

v1.1 Changelog

OMG I was playing recent carts and i saw this :0 I hope it gets featured! Also very good game :) (I only played 1 level xd)
P.D. Why in the title it's Snakbird instead of Snakebird? it's very curious xdddd
(Real image, im not using photoshop or something similar, just view the title :v)

Very hard puzzle game, but visuals look great though at least.

I thought I would just get stuck and not have that much fun but the first handful of levels I've played have been a blast so far. When I figured out 16 I felt so smart :)
Game's always looked so good great to be out now!

Wow, this game looks great and plays great. I wouldn't have though of a demake of snakebird as being pico-8 friendly, but it just works :)

I have only managed 5 levels and it's so difficult! I have never heard of Snakebird before, but your cart is really lovely. Its really well implemented and maddening, but very rewarding when you finally twig how to complete a level. Looking forward to coming back to this to complete a few more levels. Not sure I'll ever be able to do all 70!

The level of polish on display here is just off the chart!

@phil thank you! I may have overestimated the difficulty of snakebird's mechanics lol. I mostly wanted to provide fresh puzzles and avoid copying the original puzzles.

I was following your progress on mastodon. Glad you were finally able to release it. Great demake! Love all the little touches and got most of the first Island except J. Edit: J and 1st cloud done.. this will keep me busy for awhile :)

Such a beautifully crafted little demake. Truly lovely and beautiful, and just as hard as the original haha. Top marks.

Awesome!!! The game is very well made and the puzzles are great. I did get stuck on G, J, and I, though.

This is super difficult, but I've been persevering (on my phone when I have free time) and been making progress! Great polish and game feel! The puzzles are really satisfying when they click, and the variety of paths through which you can progress keep getting stuck on one from being too frustrating.
I'll be playing this for a long time!

I managed to complete the first island! And that has opened up so many more puzzles to solve! The puzzles are tough, but fair. I can see this game taking up a lot of my time. It's fantastic, and the level of polish is incredible. It's hard to believe it's a Pico8 game.
Oh, and the new puzzle mechanics are great, and allow some really clever puzzles. Brilliant!

Still playing it - still loving it.
It's a great feeling when you finally understand a particular puzzle and the levels do feel very fair. As much as I want a walkthrough I feel that would spoil it. I wondered if a hints system would work - which simply states which order to eat the fruit? But I've found that I mostly do this in my head to try and solve a level.

I just beat level 38. Wow! I'd love to know more about how you designed these puzzles. They are so intricate.

I just updated to v1.1. (changelog in the parent post) Thank you everyone for checking it out. :)
@dredds Usually I start with a small idea I want to put into a level, maybe require pushing a block in a very specific way, and test it out in isolation. The levels either end up requiring a few changes to prevent alternate solutions, not being that interesting, or even have no way of being solved. However, some levels came from just messing around in the editor or stumbling upon alternate/unintended solutions in tested levels. One of the testers, Karoo13, actually helped a lot with making some of the levels more interesting, or finding if there was even a valid solution sometimes.

This is an excellent puzzle game. I like how from varied and challenging the puzzles are, even though the game mechanics are pretty basic. Each level has its own twists and challenges. Great level design!
I am often accused of making my puzzle games too difficult, but this game shows that such a game can be popular after all (so I must be doing something else wrong... ;-). Anyway, let me continue my quest to finish all levels.

The puzzle master strikes again with an absolute masterpiece! Can't wait to see what lies beyond the first island!
I'm already baffled by a few levels, and J is just torture! Thanks for the tip and looking forward for more in the upcoming streams!

Struggled a lot but thought I was doing "ok"... until I realized I was only on the Tutorial Island :D

Great game! It's a little difficult, yet a lot of fun to play!
Maybe a noob question, but how could I download all the carts from here?
I tried changing the url but couldn't find extra and c

@milk_ Thanks! sorry for replying late. Changing the link to find the cart seems be working for me.
https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/cposts/sn/snekburd_extra-6.p8.png
but you can also get the carts by putting in the command load #snekburd_extra
into pico8 and then save snekburd_extra.p8
. Make sure to keep the same names though, as that is what is used to determine which cart to load. (Also make sure they are all in the same folder.)

I was trying to combat this
But its same thing in actual Pico as in edu version
I am missing some parts of UI
However if i use search in splore
This one works perfectly fine

@ZeroX4 This is happening because the game needs to load #snekburd_extra
to read in some extra data for sprites and the font, but is skipped over since it can't find the cart. Pico-8 needs to be set to the directory of the files and they all need to be in the same folder.

@Werxzy Ok i understand issue but i don't know how to fix it. Imagine i started using Pico few days ago. I mean i can manage to get it to work but i think its wrong way, i downloaded that snekburd_extra-6.p8.png and placed it next to actual game cart. Now i need to 1st run that extra, be told to run other cart so i run snekburd.p8.png and now everything works fine. However i need to do it every time. I did read something abut multicart but idk if that have anything to do with it. SO to my understanding i need to put that data and fonts to pico main folder or app data folder? Cause i did try both and nothing changed. While from your message above mine it seems i need to place both carts next to each other and as i mentioned https://imgur.com/lSRDy6J But maybe i am understanding it wrong my goal is to be able to load it from splore like from here https://i.imgur.com/fS2oraj.png and your solution is to load it via load GAMENAME or am i wrong?

Ok i realized that it needs to be snekburd.p8.png and snekburd-extra.p8.png so removing -6 fixed it and now it works kinda. I can go to into levels in 1st world but i cannot go to any other world. I am kicked back to title screen no matter which button i press z/x or enter. However going to the world on the right (the one with sun icon) takes me also back to title screen but https://i.imgur.com/f2JgiR1.png And i just one point out version from search in splore works just fine and don't have this issue

@ZeroX4 oh, you'll also need carts snekburd_2
to snekburd_7
as each cart is a different island/area. The "-6" at the end of the original carts is just the version number and (as you already found out) need to be removed to properly match what the carts expect to load. There's also cart snekburd_c
for the credits and ending.

@Werxzy i don't know how to download all carts from well this site is it even possible? One idea i had is your reply to milk. But then i would need to know names of each cart to adjust the link. But i went to your itch and found there zip with all carts so i downloaded that and it works so thank you for your assistance. However i am curious if you would not upload it to your itch then could i download them from here somehow?

Cleared the first non-tutorial island!

Solved over 41 levels in total, so making decent progress...
Once again a thumbs up for the level design. There's a lot of variation and it's a great feeling cracking levels that seem impossible.
