An ant simulator on PICO-8.
(This project is dedicated to the memory of all the fearless ants who lost their lives upon invading my home. May they rest in peace. 🥀)
Background
I created this project with the goal of simulating the way real-life ants find and gather food. It's fascinating that while individual ants have limited intelligence and simple behavior, they're extremely proficient at solving problems and adapting to changing conditions when acting as a group.
This all came about when I had some ants invading my house in May 2025, which simultaneously triggered both frustration and fascination as I tried to figure out how they kept getting in, even as I plugged up various tiny crevices they were entering through. I don't like killing things, but I eventually had to resort to using poison bait traps to keep them out of my home. While the fascination sparked by that experience is what inspired this project, I've come to feel it's also given me a way to honor the ants as living beings that I share the planet with (despite the killing). Maybe that's silly, but I think it's important to have a certain level of reverence for all life, and to contemplate the ways in which we're all interconnected.
Custom Desktop for picotron, also allows custom env inputs!
This also allows you to setup multiple desktops (with env inputs), change your default desktop directory, get spaces in filenames and hide file extensions!
This custom desktop also allows support for iconbase v4+ (seemingly doesn't function on newer picotron versions, iconbase is unable to update the icons before the default desktop runs)!
Add this to /appdata/system/startup.lua to get it to run immediately, e.g:
create_process("/galaktiskPicotron/tweaks/desktop.p64")
Readme:
Custom env() can override the settings if needed!
Customisability:
Options
Stored in "/appdata/galaktiskTweaks/filenav/", acts as the default!

Hello Pico-8 players! Today I’ll be releasing Bubble Madness 0.2 sooner than I expected. It turns out it wasn’t that difficult to include the two new stages and the new game mode I wanted, so here is version 0.2 with the following changes:
2 new stages:
- Cosmic Calamity: A space-themed map where you must dodge meteors and space junk that is attracted by a planet.
- Between Trams: A map set between two mountains, with rail tracks where trams pass at different speeds. The goal is to dodge the trams to win.
In addition to that, I added a new game mode that features random stages each round. The player can choose which stages will be included. (To switch between choosing the mode or choosing the map/number of rounds, you must press the X button.)
Hey,guys! I recently discovered Pico with a friend and we've started toward building games together.
I noticed VSCode had no support for Pico-8, so built an extension I'd like to share.

Hi everyone.
I've searched the BBS and the documentation, but I can't find a way to tell which key was pressed in Picotron, something similar to pico8's stat(31) that returns the last character read from the keyboard. I know you can query each key with key() and keyp(), but I wanted to know if there's a method that directly returns the character or key that was read.
Thank you!
Best regards,
