Version 1.666 !
A new item and a new #3CJam cart have been added!

Sorry it's not much of a puzzle to unlock this one :/ If I'd had space, I would have done something neater, BUT.. there are also now TWO Spiritboard-inspired masks to find :)

(also button prompts have been fixed)

-- 11/29/17 --
EDIT: Bugfix release has replaced the original version:
-Corrects some issues with cart loading
-Music is less random (now only cycles when using a door)
-tweaked a few puzzles
-note: Do NOT mess with haunted hardware -- who KNOWS what could happen?
-note: Also do NOT mess with controller 2. I mean, who KNOWS what could happen??
-note: Do NOT experiment with items -- who KNOWS what could happen?
-note: Do NOT, I repeat do NOT look for odd-numbered houses. They probably don't even exist anywhere. It isn't healthy to imagine such things. Try to stay grounded instead.

The #3CJam 2017 hub cart is finally complete!
This isn't the witch game that castpixel and I started on as a 3cjam entry. It's.. something else.
"What is it, then?" you ask??
Well.. You'll have to explore and find out for yourself. :)

If you get stuck, feel free to post here in the thread or twitter.

Manual:

[O] (z) - 'Jump'
[X] (x) - 'Action'
Other buttons: Explained as needed (mostly)

There.
Are.
Secrets.

Oh and uh.. keep your eyes peeled for updates on picOS.

Woah I dunno what I was expecting for the secret project but this definitely seems interesting. I don't think I'll have the time to really explore it for a little while, but what I've seen so far is pretty neat. It's interesting how there's an almost Metroidvania-like aspect to it. Also I'm very glad it saves everything you've collected.

A few things though:

  • Some of the carts don't load the correct game. Of the ones I've found, Spoopy worked, but selecting "It had to be bats!!" loaded Boo is missing, and selecting "Hammerstreik 1517" loaded Hallowe3n. (Also now that I've collected more I'm hitting the same static issue described by Liquidream)
  • This might just be personal preference, but isn't (x) usually mapped to the X key?
  • I'm not quite sure what the music is doing. There seem to be several distinct songs but there's no clear reasoning to when they change. (Or if it is just one song, I'd suggest maybe splitting it up into distinct tracks that play in different places and sound more unified.)

Nice idea, thx for putting this together.

If I'm honest, I thought you were gonna make it EASIER/QUICKER for ppl to play our games in this cart
(but the more I think about it - it's kinda cool that games are slowly "unlocked" as you progress/pickup carts).

Unfortunately, I hit an issue (not sure if it's just me), but even once I'd "unlocked" a few carts, only SPOOPY would actually work, the others just stayed on "static". Also, when SPOOPY does load, it seems to soft-reset a few times initially. If it's not just me, then this could be more of a "PICO-8 BBS Cart Load" issue, but thought I'd mention it, just in case.

Again, thanks for taking the time to tie-in our games within another game - how "Meta" :D

@Jusiv and @Liquidream - I'll check it out - thanks for the heads up! One of the last minute things I had to do to get it under the token limit had to do with how the cart id's are stored so there could be an issue there. I tested spoopy and a couple others but not all of them. So I'll check my math and put up a bug fix in a few hours.

Yeahhh.. it started as a simple browser. Then a platform 'arcade. And then I thought.. why not have costumes with Easter eggs? And why not have puzzles sort of based on the games? And hey.. wouldn't a bike be cool? And a hidden second player? And odd numbered houses that ... Well you get the idea.

EDIT: Okay, the cart has been updated. I fixed any broken cart links and retested all the puzzles. A couple items have been tweaked to be more fun. Enjoy!

this is really cool and I haven't got a chance to really dig into it yet :D but I just wanted to report a small bug: the X and O button prompts appear to be backwards in a few places: the "change suit" and "change mask" screen, and the "manual" in the OP

P#46828 2017-11-29 12:26 ( Edited 2017-11-29 17:26)

@kittenm4ster: Yeah for some reason I thought that the x key was the O glyph and the z key was the X glyph.

Fixed now!

Oh wow! Just took a walk to a few houses a minute ago. Dressed up, threw coins, played pico-8 games! Totally a good halloween night. I'll mess around later with this. Thanks to everyone for their work in making this possible!

@Rahrahrah Glad you liked it!

lol, I'm curious if people have been able to solve all the puzzles yet?

During playtesting, finding the odd-numbered houses (1, 3, 5.. 13) really seemed to go over peoples' heads. (cough)

P#46912 2017-12-01 09:56 ( Edited 2017-12-01 14:56)

I played this for a while last night and found the odd-numbered houses and most of the carts! but not all! And I only used two puzzle-type items I think...so do all the items have a use in some sort of puzzle?

P#46916 2017-12-01 12:02 ( Edited 2017-12-01 17:02)

@kittenm4ster - Yep! Originally there was an item I used in debugging, a bag for storing candy, that didn't do anythjng. But it didn't have any use so I removed it.

So everything you'll find in the hub has a use. Well, they all have a part in unlocking a cart (or a form of transportation.) Like the bookcase, that's just there to unlock Spoopy and give a hint you should probably go to house #4 first to grab your bike.

..And there are at least two items that are used to unlock 2 carts. But maybe I'm getting aHEAD of myself there..

And there's one item whose use isn't activated by the button and just gets used automatically when it's needed, but if you've made it to the odd houses then you've already hammered that out.

Congrats on the release, enargy! My favorite parts:

Finally finding those odd-numbered houses. :S
The fact that the burger is called a 'burg'.
The haunted PICO-8 console.
Flying around on the broom.

I had a great time with it, and it's super cool that you've integrated a whole bunch of 3cjam games into it too. :D

P#46958 2017-12-03 12:52 ( Edited 2017-12-03 17:52)

@eggnog: BURG and the Hungry Seer are a reference to Wandering Magic

Glad you enjoyed it!
