Hey everyone!
I just finished my little pokemon-esque jrpg: pico monsters.
In this game there are markers called 'picostops' scattered throughout the map which drop
random items whenever you have defeated a few wild monsters. 'Picostops' also replenish and revive all the monsters in your party. Catch new monsters with picoballs. Due to the save restrictions of pico8 the
team size in this is only 4. Every wild monsters can have up to 4 different moves it's recommended to catch and compare to build your best team. There is also a very small story about professor corks whereabouts...
Let me know if you run into any issues. Thanks for checking it out :)
Controls:
arrow keys: move around
x: open menu to view monsters, items and save
z: interact with people and things
Each monster is associated with an element and some elements have advantages over others.
Advantage of elements:
Earth: none
Air: Water
Water: Fire
Fire: Earth, Air

Version 1.1: Added reset game, fixed some bugs

man i am going to have to sit down and put some time into this, but after a couple minutes already this is amazing

I'm not sure if I'm seeing this right, but I think when you miss an attack it just skips the enemies turn. Other than that this game is really fun! I like the pokestops and the world is cool.

Looks like there are some issues with dropping items and releasing Pico-mon. In the case of items it's okay because items just drop the first of the type of item you select, making organizing your backpack impossible but that's not much of a hassle. But in the case of Pico-mon, whenever I press the release button on ANY mon, it specifically goes out of its way to release this other high-level one that I want to keep. :( blarf.

Thank you everyone for playing!
@JTE: I did update with a quick-fix for the monster release issue. Maybe sorting the inventory automatically by type would help with the item drop issue?
@Sadministrator: Ooops, yeah that's a bug. Will be fixed in the next version.

Is there anyway of deleting the save data and starting a new game?

It's cool to see a nice turn-based rpg in pico-8! I think leveling up would be a bit more compelling if the monsters learned new moves, because as it is now, leveling up just makes everything else in the world stronger along with your monster. I tended to upgrade my party instead of leveling them :)
Just a heads-up, I got a runtime error when re-entering the cave with the stairs past the boulders:
runtime error camx = p.inside.x*8 line 1899: attempt to index field 'inside' (a number value) in _draw line 1899 |

I'd expect Earth > Fire and Water > Earth. And then Air > Water, and Fire > Air. I'll have to give this a go and see how it plays out, it looks pretty legit!

@josefnpat: Whoops. Fixed it, don't know what caused that. But you basically completed the storyline.
@TonyTheTGR: Had to change up the elemental advantages a bit to have some kind of balance in the game.

Awesome game!
Couple notes:
When a monster has more than 2 attacks it spills over the frame.. would expect them to be more to the right after the first 2
Don't get what was really unlocked with the hammer, there doesn't seem to be anything of interest in there, am I missing something?
How do you win? Did I win or am I stuck? Maybe if there was a cliff leaving your house, you could end the game when you get home, or maybe have cork count how many monsters you've caught, and endgame when you've turned them all into cork?
Not trying to be critical, this is probably the best game I've played on pico8.
Thanks!

Played this to the point where the guy says now you can explore the cave. Hammering down the walls didn't reveal anything. Minju, this might've been an earlier version as someone else apparently reached the ending.
Overall, an incredible and PICO contender to the considerably more complex, Pokemon.
Here is Pokemon Blue running in B&W (w color enhance) at 1mb. This is the one that started it all in the U.S. ! :)

Great game! Really pushes what you can do with pico-8. 1 thing. How do I move the rocks?

Awesome game!
Loved "Tinkerelle" lol.
Just a little note: The random encounters are waaaay too often imho. Please reduce them a little in your next update. :)
I'm looking forward to create a Dragon Quest/Warrior Monsters inspired game when I get the time to look a little into PICO-8 developing.
