Help, I’m a beginner. I got an error on line 36 while copying the code below. I don’t know what to modify. Can someone please help me take a look?

Welcome to my first proper PICO-8 game, and submission to the BBS!

After a few weeks, I'm finally getting around to submitting this PICO-8 version of the only game I've ever finished, originally made using Processing back in 2017.

  • Move side-to-side to dodge the falling shapes
  • ❎ (X) to select menu items
  • 🅾️ (Z) to engage "doub mode"

I've taken a few passes at trying to remake this arcade game since the original over the years, particularly in the Bevy game engine. But I often lost interest, or became overwhelmed by scope creep. So PICO-8 has come in clutch for me here with it's coercion towards productive game development! It's something that my brother has always had me on about, so he'll be pleased to learn that I've finally "published" my game.

At the moment, I realize that diving straight into my current game project isn't the best approach. Instead, I need to take a step back and focus on mastering the fundamentals of PICO-8 first.

Why Basics Matter:

  • PICO-8 is a unique fantasy console with its own quirks and limitations.
  • Understanding core concepts like:
    • Sprite creation
    • Code syntax
    • Sound design
    • Map editing
is crucial before tackling a full game.

What This Means For My Project

  • Progress on the actual game might slow down temporarily.
  • But investing time in learning will save headaches later.
  • It ensures the final product is polished and well-crafted.

Next Steps

  1. Go through beginner tutorials and examples.
  2. Experiment with small projects or demos.
  3. Build confidence in using PICO-8 tools effectively.

Thanks for understanding—getting these basics down is an important part of making something great!

Something I find confusing about Picotron is how it loads carts into RAM - and then how you load subsiquent carts into RAM etc - I am getting used to it BUT

I think there needs to be a simple way to simply unload everything back to nothing without rebooting the workspace.
(Sorry others may have requested this)

Unload the current cart - code/gfx/map/snd etc - all back to nil/defaults

I know pico8 works this way but with pico8 being purely a "programing/creation environment" that was fine and made sense but with picotron being a workstation it just feels odd to reboot to reset to nil as such.

Gameplay

Guide your balloon skyward to reach the rainbow awaiting you above. Maneuver around the cloud platforms avoiding hazards like birds, whirlwinds, and UFOs. Collect various powerups to help you ascend higher in your Race to the Rainbow.

Updated
Build is 95% complete. Label art was done my son, "Buggy" for his first published work.

This game was the first project I began when I started Pico-8 over a year ago. I knew absolutely nothing and struggled for a bit until I decided to follow a few tutorials. I've come back with what I've learned and tried to finish what I started. Haha

I'm still polishing it up before it's final, but I'm getting close. I'm still not entirely happy with my wind gust sprite, enemy behaviors need to be tweaked, and some more polish needs to be added. Any advice or recommendations are appreciated. I hope you all enjoy my first idea I had for a Pico-8 game. If there are any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Update v0.2: use spr(1) as a bitmap. Colors are based on the picotron logo.

The kingdom is desperate.

Drunk on their fame, our plumbers refuse to work.

The waterworks are on the brink of collapse.

Only one person can save us...

THE OTHER PLUMBER

Background

Inspired by the release of CorgiSpace and SEBI16, I wanted to try out PICO-8. Here is the result! My first PICO-8 game, made between January 18th-22nd of 2026. Thank you for playing, I would love to hear your thoughts!

Dev Log

I discuss the game and puzzle design of The Other Plumber here!

Hints

Below are a series of hints for each level, each one should give slightly more away than the last.

The final hint will give the solution to the puzzle. The solutions are given as a sequence of coordinates which pipes should be dropped from (if its a corner spot then a direction to drop will also be included). So 3x0 means drop a pipe from the middle column of the top row, 0x3 means drop a pipe from the middle row of the left column, 5x6 means drop a pipe from the 5th column of the bottom row, and 6x6up means drop a pipe upwards from the bottom right corner.

  • Bosses reward you with a random new weapon when defeated

Choose your upgrades wisely and see how long you can last!

My first pico-8 game, the feature creep got away from me so I pulled it back to be a bit more basic, still getting used to the limitations that p8 has, which are fun to try and work around don't get me wrong. So here's motesoul, a souls-lite adventure that wears its inspirations very heavily on its sleeve, x to attack, o to interact and x+o to enter and exit the status menu. Hope you enjoy.

Push removed from bosses to avoid the player being pushed into the void

Very new to PICO-8, and thought it would be fun to make a Klangfarbenmelodie-ish version of this movement from a Bach cello suite.

Hello.

Here is Catventure, a little platformer where you play a Cat being stuck outside his home.

This is my first Pico8 "game", build in more or less 10 days while discovering the platform, I had a lot of fun doing it.

The code by itself is not great and could be optimized, but the goal was to finish something not to overthink it.

Hope you enjoy this little walk.

Controls

  • Left/Right to move
  • Down to crawl
  • x to jump
  • c(o) to meow (just for fun)

After seeing Loot Loot Goblin and Ninjado I got a little obsessed about the techniques used, and especially by the concept of displaying different sprites in the light source - a technique that Ninjado uses so cleverly.

I devised my own steps, which did work, but used around 56% of CPU at 30FPS.

I subsequently found this superb post from @Krystman and tweaked my code using the method described under "True Clipping Mask with Method 4" - although I also minimised the steps just a little. This now runs at 39% CPU at 30 FPS.

  • Draw the unlit scene to the screen (0x60)
  • Draw all our lights with circfill() using Peach (15), which will be our transparent colour.
  • Copy the screen memory to RAM (0xa0)
  • Clear the screen memory and draw the lit scene (0x60)

I don't really know too much about making a platformer,
so feel free to comment or give suggestions on what I can improve on for this.
It really helps out a ton!
Without further ado, here's the instructions:

  • Use left-right buttons to move
  • Use O button to jump

Mechanics:
Spikes and lava, of course drain your health,
Jump Blocks make you SUPER JUMP!
Hearts refill your HP,
and Score adds +1000 to your score! There's one in every room, except for one.
Coins also add +100 to your score.

This is my first platformer AND first metroidvania!
I thought 1bit was a nice look, and it was!
I wanted the game to have an arcade element to it, where the difficulty ramps up quickly,

This is in no way affiliated with Lexaloffle. Any issues are to be directed towards myself personally.

I've put together a simple web extension which adds the ability to block users on the BBS.
If anybody has requests for any additions I'd be happy to try implement it!
This will be intended for release on chromium and firefox browsers, with it being published on the firefox web store.
I'm not going to pay chrome to publish my extension so you'll have to manually install it annoyingly 😓

example (in comments) https://prnt.sc/SU-8PZm_2DFs
example (in feed) https://prnt.sc/_Pe6CtzEkViu

The chrome extension can be found and downloaded on the github repository.
Firefox extension (under review as of writing this): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/lexaloffle-bbs-enhancements/

Vanilla Scoundrel

It's my first released game, enjoy the gameplay and take a comment if you like it.

Unlike some other adaptations of this game for digital media, I sought to keep it as close as possible to the real game by using a standard deck of cards.

Based on card game Scoundrel by Zach Gage and Kurt Bieg.

Pico Underlords (Auto-Battler)

Description

Welcome to Pico Underlords, a demake of the popular auto-battler genre (Dota Underlords/TFT) compressed into the PICO-8!

Manage your gold, build a powerful army of heroes, and climb the ranks. Strategize around Alliances like Beasts, Mages, and Knights to outsmart your AI rival. Face off against challenging Creep Waves in the early game to build your economy before entering the final PvP showdown.

Features

  • Unit Cap System: Your board capacity scales with your level. Spend gold on XP to field more units!
  • Persistent AI Rival: You aren't just fighting random mobs. An AI Rival builds its own team, buys heroes, and upgrades them just like you do.
  • Creep Simulation: To keep the game fair, the AI also battles creeps behind the scenes, taking damage and earning gold along with you.
  • Alliance Hover Preview: Not sure who to buy? Hover over any unit in the shop or on the board to see a visual preview of all other units in that alliance.
  • No Hero Permadeath: Your heroes retreat to the bench when defeated, returning at full strength for the next round. Only the Commanders' health matters!
  • Full Tutorial: A step-by-step interactive guide to teach you the ropes of buying, selling, and leveling.

Controls

  • D-Pad: Move Cursor
  • X: Select Unit / Buy from Shop
  • Z (Tap in Shop): Reroll hero pool (Costs 2G)
  • Z (Hold in Shop): Buy XP (Costs 4G)
  • Z (Hold on Bench): Sell unit for 1G
  • Z (Hold on Board): Start Combat Phase

Credits

Design/Code: Inspired by Valve's Dota Underlords.

Directional

A small and difficult platformer game!

Made this in like a week in a half or so I hope you like it!

Once you complete the main game be sure to look for the bonus levels for an extra challenge!
At the time of this games release nobody in testing has ever reached the bonus ending, so good luck!

v1.1:
New practice mode level splits: once you complete an individual level in practice mode it will display your time for that specific level. The timer for the splits begins when you first move. Alongside this, there have been many small changes to several levels (this will not affect regular gameplay), as well as decoration improvements. There have also been various improvements in the code, although this will not affect players
