Great Game! I'm attempting to develop a Tetris like game myself.
Personally if the player had the ability to slide a piece into place instead of the Tetrominos sticking
once they make contact with something would be a definite plus. The ability to negotiate pieces to fill
holes on stacked pieces really adds to the experience for me and makes the game more forgiving.
Nonetheless great game! I really liked the visuals! And the music is top notch :)
Absolutely fantastic! Going straight to my favorites. I haven't gotten the chance to play Tetris Effect for myself yet, but Eurogamer named it their Game of the Year, and if this is any indication, then it could be mine, too. The music is an excellent conversion and very relaxing, and the background visuals are super fluid and cool. I always love seeing Pico-8 demakes of big games, and you did a really good job here.

I'm somewhat unclear what Zone does but I do like the effect for it.
Controls seems off, but I think I'm definitely comparing it to some more recent Tetris game I played. (Specifically I notice that I want to rotate with Z and hard drop with up)
This game is awesome. Gameplay, visuals, sound - I love it all. I showed it to my wife and she told me that I can't just throw such addictive stuff at her whenever I want. That's a complement, so you know.
I played Tetris a lot on a GameBoy so I feel that controls do not fit what I'm used to, what led to some errors during play. I also spot one bug. I completed two lines: 1 (at the very bottom) and 3, separated by not completed line 2. This led to situation where remaining blocks were floating over empty line at the bottom.
I wasn't planning more work on this, but I had so many great comments and encouragements about it that I can't really ignore.
So that's why I've updated the control scheme:
Up: Hard Drop
Z: Zone (...which makes sense)

For the issue of the floating lines, I've seen it a few times. It all comes down to the algorithm of Gravity https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris#Gravity
I have implemented a classic one without chain reaction. Which means that floating pieces can definitely happen.

Compliments first. Good job on making tetris. It's very pretty. I like the zone and the zone effect. I do wish pico8 had a 3rd button so we could rotate with it, and still get the drop, but that's the limitations of a limited system.
However, I don't like that there's no slide before pieces lock in. Also, pieces don't enter the arena oriented like they are in the preview. Either rotate the preview or reset the rotation of pieces entering the arena. It's one line of code.
But I do like floaters. That's just right.
Thanks for this, it's lovely. Although the RNG seems weighted. I never get threw or more of the same brick in other tetris games and just had five or six of the same here. Since you don't want to work on this any more I may look under the hood and try and tinker despite having no LUA experience. I've never played the original effect but am dying to so this fills the gap very nicely, cheers!
