What a lovely little Hanukkah-themed world you've created @MBoffin. Love how how minimal it is, and yet, ticks so many adventure/RPG boxes.
Looking forward to seeing this unfold! :D
Nice work @MBoffin! Although I started playing before reading the description so I didn't realize there is a IRL time aspect to it, and was banging my head against the wall for a while (literally, in game).
Might want to put something in game to explain that you have to come back each day :D
Day one: found three puns. (Four if "light" in the game description counts.) Also salt. :)
heh true. I think a little metallic 'chink' sound effect as they pop in and out would have helped a little?
Part of the issue could have been my keyboard though. I'm using a laptop where they decided those dumb 'big left/right, itty-bitty up/down on top of each other in the middle' style cursor keys were a smart way to go.
other feedback -- the instant cell-based movement
and all the cute characters/dialogue reminds me a lot of Bitsy. I'd like to play more games in this style.
I'm hoping people enjoy it and keep coming back day after day. I definitely plan to!
Thanks! Yeah, the spikes used to have a sound originally (and the button-activated ones still do), so I think it's a bug.
Funny that you mention Bitsy. My next upcoming PICO-8 zine has a tutorial for making a simple adventure game in 10 steps. This advent game is basically just a modified/extended version of that tutorial. The tutorial game is very easy for brand new game devs to modify and really make their own, much like Bitsy. I was heavily inspired by the simplicity of Bitsy and how people made SO MANY different types of games with such a simple initial ruleset. So, yes, there's good reason you see a similarity. :D
Here's a Twitter thread I posted a few months back about the new tutorial. Each of the gifs posted uses the same code.
There are so many games where spikes are never explained or even acknowledged; the maze-maker's dialogue caught me by surprise and made me LOL.
I will make a walkthrough in ROT-13. Will work on it.

Found a bug. After I had the doughnut but before I finished the maze, I talked to the berry woman and she gave me berries again, making the doughnut invisible in my inventory. Fortunately when I got through the maze I was still able to give a doughnut, but it seems I can also give the berries, and get the jam. Don't know what'll happen if I go for a second doughnut.
@joealarson Good find! That was a very specific bug that was came from the code that lets you save progress and continue from where you left off. I fixed it.
