My first mostly complete game with PICO-8. Its a de-make of the gba/dreamcast game "ChuChu Rocket". It should run at 60fps for about 90 of the levels. All the levels should be able to be solved with the same solutions as the original games.

Controls should be intuitive. Click on an arrow tile to pick it up. Click on a blank tile to either run or place an arrow tile. The movement speed will double if you click while its running.

There is a level editor, but I have it disabled at the moment. I'm trying to figure out a way to share the levels easily (web, codes, etc...).

I am working on the sounds and music. I'll update the cart when its finished.

Feedback is welcome. Let me know if you find any bugs or issues.

The title screen says "press any key" but doesn't listen for the O button (which btw is arguably the primary button as far as the SDL2 GameController API mapping is concerned, i.e. it is mapped to "A" on an Xbox 360 controller)

Updated.

I like it! Very good conversion.

One issue though is that the red barriers don't read well (for me at least). I'd recommend making them a color that pops more, or if possible make them a bit thicker.

I tried to make them stand out more. Doubling the lines makes it look terrible.

X is still the primary button though, which is very confusing (I agree with @kittenm4ster).

I wonder if the in-game menu is a little unintuitive though. You can always press Z (which I always hit when I want to place a tile because I think it's the primary key) to go back to the level select at any time, taking up a button. That means placing tiles and running the level are on the same button. After placing the last tile, I have to move my cursor to an unoccupied spot on the map and press X to run, otherwise I'll just pick up the tile again... A little weird.

Are there levels where you don't need to use all your tiles? If there aren't, maybe make Z pick up tiles and X place tiles, and if there are no more tiles to place, X runs the level? Or Z always runs the level, while X places and picks up tiles depending on whether you're in an empty spot or not? (Level select can just be in the pause menu IMO, no need for a dedicated button.)

I dunno. I'm not a UX expert. Very nice game though! I love puzzle games and I've never played the original, so I'll try to beat this one.

I love Pico-8 demakes, and I've made one myself. I'd be interested to see if you solve the level editor, that'd be very cool. In the original game I made a PICO-8 version of, Polarium for Nintendo DS and GBA, players can exchange levels by giving each other codes, so that's what I've considered doing.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll update the controls. I completely forgot we can add to the start menu now. Great idea!

About the codes, I've "compressed" the levels already. If you know of a good way to condense them further I would love to know. Right now I think the levels are 108 characters in length. A bit much for sharing.

I wish we had some access to the web. Multiplayer games, highscore charts, level storage and sharing, etc...

Controls have been updated. Does that make more sense?

Very nice! Much more intuitive to me, at least. Perhaps add a "reset level" to the start menu too?

I don't really know any better way to compress. I believe @zep has been talking about a way to share stuff online, but I'm not sure if that's still in the pipeline, and whether it could store stuff as big as levels. I think it was meant more for high scores.

Need some music help to finish the game. Let me know if you would like to help.
