I wanted to try something much smaller in scope this time around; A game I can finish in a considerably quicker time frame.

Why not Duck Hunt?

Pico Hunt aims to bring the best of the NES and arcade VS. game together into one whole experience!

What is included...

  • Full, end-to-end remakes of duck hunting and clay shooting modes, as well as the full VS. arcade gameplay experience, kept separate so the NES-style games can be played, too!

  • All graphics, hand drawn and higher res than the originals!
  • Animated title screen that pays homage to Vs. Duck Hunt
  • Main menu with a small nod to Duck Hunt Medley from Super Smash Bros. (Thanks go to Nathan Silver and their NES rendition of the song for the inspiration!)
  • Duck hunting with background art by @HeyNetters , gameplay and rounds of increasing difficulty
  • Clay shooting screen with background art by @HeyNetters, gameplay and rounds of increasing difficulty
  • Vs. mode gameplay for one or two players with high scores and a leaderboard

What is planned...

  • Possibly some extras!

Please give it a go and tell me what you think!

Check below for the change log

Happy Hunting!!

Change log:

(8/17/25)

Version 1.2

This update brings in fixes and changes from the Tournament cart

-(Fixed) Vs. mode three duck mode would bug out if you mag dumped
-(Added) Small Pico Hunt logo to the Hall of Fame screen
-(Fixed) You could get a perfect bonus if you only hit 12 ducks in the bonus mode

(7/25/25) Minor

  • Made minor changes to dog sprite graphics. I felt that the mouth was too big when not laughing...

(7/24/25)

Version 1.1

  • (Added) Name entry will time out after 33 seconds of no input, this will forfeit the score, and the name will not be registered
    • reduced button cool down so the letter selection is a bit more responsive
  • (Changed) tightened up spawn timing of both ducks and clays to cut out more dead air and improve consistency
    • the next clay volley will delay for just a moment longer if the last clay was missed
  • (Fixed) bonus ducks would not stop the flapping sound if they went off the left side of the screen on bonus failure
  • (Tweaked) frequency of duck quacks during break time. it should be a bit less annoying now

(7/21/25)

  • (Changed) duck clumping now takes duck flight direction into account
  • (Tweaked) polished the bonus game sound cutoffs so there is no flapping if there are no ducks actively flying
  • (Adjusted) Break time animations and timers for a cleaner presentation
  • Upped the volume of flaps and quacks

(7/19/25)

  • (Changed) Added a shoot delay on the menu to prevent shooting before buttons have stopped moving. This fixes an issue where Vs. could be shot while it was still under NES, and not in its place
  • Touched up button sprite art for better shadowing
  • (Added) Clay debris now bring the clay's X and Y velocities into their movement
  • (Tweaked) Reticle size is increased when in light gun mode for easier targeting with light gun iron sights and fingers
    • Reticle box has been centered in general, it was offset for a bit and this may have made targeting more difficult

(7/18/25)

  • (Added) New label by @HeyNetters
  • (Changed) Difficulty curve for NES clay shooting has been smoothed over to allow games to go for longer
    • (Changed) When a trick shot is going to fire, the warning sound plays. Now, there's a ~1/2 second delay before the volley

(7/16/25)

Version 1.0

  • (Added) transition polish during attract mode
  • (Added) A "SHOT!!" indicator for the AI during attract mode
  • (Tweaked) Hall of Fame fade outs, and allowed for a click to hurry it up
  • (Added) Vs mode cartoon that runs after every second loop
  • (Changed) Bonus mode tally now gives the earned score from hits and adds it to player score at the end of the round
  • (Changed) Bonus mode layout change, showing player's score
    • Dog now only runs out if you get 30 hits or more, and only barks for you if you're Perfect!!
  • (Added) Score multiplier that increments based on level reached
  • (tweaked) Clay velocities and speed ramps for better late game play. It is still tough, though...
    • NES clay shooting starts with one volley at a time, then ups it to 2 on level 3
    • NES Clay shooting brings in trick shots at level 10 and higher
  • Trick shots are announced in both vs and NES modes with an audio cue

(7/10/25)

  • Leaderboards and name entry have been added
  • attract mode with auto play has been added
  • Clays tweaked some more for into-the-screen movement
  • Art added for bonus round background, thanks to @HeyNetters
  • made Vs. mode extra life sound a bit louder

(7/7/25)

  • Adjusted duck clumping behavior to select which duck to diverge
  • Duck hunting background art added. many thanks to @HeyNetters
  • Beefed up clay shooting gameplay
    • Clays now fly into the screen more
    • Every so often there is a chance for a two-clay trick shot to fire. this chance increases every time a trick shot doesn't happen
  • Bonus round has been tweaked for faster and more frantic gameplay
    • More ducks can be onscreen than before, and the round ends much faster with less dead air

(7/5/25)

  • Vs. mode has been added
    • play duck hunting, clay shooting and a bonus round in a loop of progressing difficulty.
    • Vs. mode doesn't use a quota system like the NES game, instead a missed target subtracts a life. zero lives and it's game over
    • every third loop is a frenzy round: three targets, three shots. don't miss.
    • scoring system is in place. A life is awarded for the first 45000 points, then every 90000 points after that
  • Added new buttons and menu behavior
  • The gamepad can control the duck in NES one duck mode

(6/8/25)

  • Added some polish to the main menu
  • Added an option in the pause menu to disable the reticle. This is good for light guns or touch screens!
  • Sorto now waits for the current game to finish before he begins sorting, if he arrives early.

(6/5/25)

  • Added a new text renderer
  • Changed the Duck Hunt Medley to fill it out a bit and give it more of a "Menu" vibe
  • Added rounds with increasing difficulty for Duck hunting and Clay shooting
    • Added fly away mechanic to duck hunting
  • Added a basic scoring system
  • Added a commendation when clearing every tenth level
  • Added duck behavior variety, denoted by color
    • Black ducks Bounce off the screen edges
    • Blue ducks steer in flight
    • Red ducks do all these things as well as change course when you fire
    • Red ducks only appear every sixth round until Round 20 where they begin appearing every other round
  • Removed bonus round button for now, until I can get it working better

(5/12/25)

  • Added a sorting gremlin called Sorto. He sorts the pips at the end of a round!

(5/11/25)

  • Duck hunting gameplay has been added
    • Shoot ducks in groups of two... don't miss
  • Early round logic in place for both duck hunting and clay shooting.
    • Merely the loop is in, no progression yet
  • Added art for the ducks and the dog... pretty much everything except VS. arcade stuff!

(5/2/25)

  • Early clay shooting gameplay has been added
    • Clays are launched in volleys of two, and the game currently goes indefinitely

(5/1/25)

  • Initial posting to BBS

Really nice, some great polish, a clearly very loving remake.

@xietanu I'm really happy that you saw the love I poured into the game! Did you manage to get a high score in Vs. mode?

@HeyNetters ♥<(0.0<)

Such a faithful remake - pretty amazing. You got the music, sound and everything down pat.

I bet my pajamas that you spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out how to re-create a physical light gun experience for the picotron before settling on the mouse (which works great!) :)

@zangman I'm glad you feel how faithful it is.

You get to keep your pajamas because you're absolutely right! I was initially going to implement the whole white square targeting tech, but ended up realizing it wasn't necessary.

That said, this game CAN be played with a Sinden light gun, and there's a pause menu option to accommodate for these as well as touch screens!

1

@Turbochop That's pretty cool, I wasn't aware of the Sinden light gun, thanks for sharing. Touch screen is a very nice idea, I'll give that a try later.

Definitely see myself coming back to this game frequently.
