An homage to the Commodore 64 Wheel of Fortune game. In keeping with the C64 era, the included puzzles are 80's themed.

This absolutely rules! I actually LOL'd when player three said "Yeet!" when spinning the wheel.

P#136682 2023-10-31 15:32

Bjorn made me look very bad... Great game! I did not play the original, but my gf and me where absolutely invested whilst playing this. Thank you for sharing!

P#136683 2023-10-31 15:41

I just had the game generate a puzzle where the answer was "Commodore 64" and the opponent that tried to solve the puzzle crashed the game because you can't guess digits...

P#136685 2023-10-31 16:42

@rnd LOL oops! Thanks I threw that puzzle in there last minute, along with a bunch of other ones with digits, and I guess I never tested them (it's supposed to reveal those like punctuation). I'll fix that, thanks for letting me know!

@taxicomics thanks for playing! My wife and I had been playing the Commodore 64 one on Sunday mornings with coffee for like a year before I finally had to make my own version.

@2bitchuck Your comment that this "absolutely rules" made me LOL so we're even!

Thanks so much guys, I absolutely have to go play everything you've each made. Looks like some pretty incredible stuff!🙇‍♂️

P#136688 2023-10-31 16:53

Fixed the digits issue and updated the cartridge.

 symbols = split("1_2_3_4_5_6_7_8_9_0_-_'_._,_?_!_%_@_#_$_&_-", "_"),

 symbols = split("1_2_3_4_5_6_7_8_9_0_-_'_._,_?_!_%_@_#_$_&_-", "_", false),

Digits were being parsed as integers instead of strings. 😅 I do appreciate all those helpful default behaviours though. I was really scrambling to save tokens multiple times.

P#136690 2023-10-31 17:11

Those bots are over powered. They even knew the exact number of letters.

P#136691 2023-10-31 17:48

@grandell1234 what do you mean the exact number of letters?

There's skill levels for the different computer players but I only ended up implementing 'smart' and 'dumb' players. Only difference is the smart ones pick letters in most-popular-letters order and the dumb ones pick randomly. I might improve this if I can find the tokens. :)

P#136692 2023-10-31 18:04

Love this! I played the similar PC game a ton back in the 80’s

P#136756 2023-11-01 19:01 ( Edited 2023-11-01 19:03)

lol this is a very nice implementation, great job!

P#136757 2023-11-01 19:20

@Anrky So glad to hear you enjoyed it! I think the mid-80's C64 version is somehow on my top games of all time list. 😂

@2darray thanks for the compliment! This is my first PICO-8 effort. Given the amazing things people manage to fit in a cartridge I'm not sure why I struggled so much to find tokens. Incredibly gratifying when you find a way to save a bunch though! :)

P#136766 2023-11-01 21:14

I really liked playing this game. On the final puzzle I got "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", but the parentheses were impossible to input so I lost. But other than that it was very fun to play the Wheel of Fortune, and I really liked the Fun "Facts".

P#136798 2023-11-02 14:10

@Cobbi oops! I'll fix that and update it, thanks a lot for letting me know! Glad you enjoyed the "facts". :D

P#136799 2023-11-02 14:14

This is so great! What a clever use of the limited screen space. Everything is so well done, very fun to play, and squeezes in a lot of character wherever possible. I love how elements slide in and out between stages, and the BZZT rumble animations when you mess up.

I made a scrappy Wheel of Fortune clone on the Amiga named "Rueda" ages ago (30 years!) and this feels more feature-complete, haha. For some reason I drew a detailed wheel with all the numbers and shrunk it down, so it looks like gibberish as it spins. I don't know what I was thinking. Just using the colors is a much better idea.

Thanks for making this!

P#136869 2023-11-03 20:00

@natebeaty gosh, thanks for the high praise I really appreciate that! The C64 version gave me a lot of solid ideas to build on top of, and I took inspiration from more modern games for the sliding and screen-shake stuff. The thing I'm least happy with is the way your total score is displayed (after a period of inactivity), but the C64 had a lot more real estate than we're working with over here. ;)

I had several Amigas back in the day and always meant to try building something in AMOS myself but never did. I loved the video, sounds especially -- so AMIGA -- thanks for sharing that! :)

P#136871 2023-11-03 20:22

@natebeaty I sent your game video to my brother, as we were both Amiga users for years and here was his response:

"Holy crap, I’ve played that guy’s Rueda game! I remember the rainbow letters and the sting sound when you guess a puzzle, lol. 😂 "

P#136872 2023-11-03 20:40

Lovely remake! ⭐
Won with 31,700 score at first attempt 👍
I like seeing other C64 'kids' here in the Pico-8 community! (I did a couple C64 remakes for Pico-8 as well recently, I guess I've picked the hardest and most hated ones lol - both miners by Ian Gray)

P#136922 2023-11-04 19:37

@Heracleum thanks! Holy crap you’ve got a bunch of amazing-looking games I’ve got to check out. I just now played Jungle Ping because I played Jungle Hunt a ton on the C64. Incredible work!

P#136923 2023-11-04 20:00

> "Holy crap, I’ve played that guy’s Rueda game! I remember the rainbow letters and the sting sound when you guess a puzzle, lol. 😂 "

@hudgfactor whoa! That's so crazy to hear about folks playing it back in the day. I love the community aspect here, and would have killed for that when I was making Rueda in 1992. All I had was my one-line BBS "The Real Flavor" (!) which I guess ran when I wasn't coding?

The sound effects are so weird in Rueda, I don't remember where I pieced all that together. I don't think I was skilled enough to write the theme music and I don't credit anyone which makes me cringe.

P#137027 2023-11-06 18:22

This is great! I love the dumb facts "Did you know the letter r is more popular than soccer?"

P#137142 2023-11-09 06:58

This is pretty cool.

P#137145 2023-11-09 07:23

that's pretty good innit? wasn't born anywhere near the 80s but pretty fun game nonetheless!

P#137661 2023-11-20 03:03

Thanks, @b0b89, it's really fun knowing there are people out there that enjoy my stupid sense of humour. ;)

@Amac, thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it. The community on here is incredibly supportive.

@Ummmm_ok if that's from one game that's a huge score! FYI, if you use the same name and win multiple games it does consider you a 'returning champion' and keeps a running tally. It also deletes you if you lose though!

Regarding the 80's theme -- I originally wanted to have multiple puzzle sets with different themes but have run out of space so many times. The puzzles are crammed into one long string which saves on tokens but still pushes the compressed size limits. Maybe fewer dumb facts and more puzzles would be a solution. ;)

P#137912 2023-11-26 23:41

So fantastic! I had the c64 version in the 80s. The only thing missing are those quirky contestant pictures and I don't expect the dev to go to that amount of trouble. The game is fantastic! I finally won a game with $28,300. If only I could spend the money in the showcase ;) I'll keep this one in my favorites for a long time.

P#137918 2023-11-27 03:44

@Gatton High praise, thank you!

For the contestant characters, I think you're thinking of the various other gameshow games, like Jeopardy, Win Lose or Draw, Classic Concentration, others I'm forgetting -- they all had more or less the same set of animated contestants.

Wheel of Fortune doesn't have those but it does have an animated Vanna White who shuffles around to reveal the letters. I originally intended to put her in as well. I may still try to do it if I can free up tokens.

You mentioned the showcase, LOL -- while researching Wheel of Fortune I was reminded of the showcase in the early seasons, having completely forgotten that you didn't get to keep the money, but rather had to quickly decide and shout what you wanted to purchase as a bunch of pointless housewares were rotated in front of the contestant. 😂 That would definitely be more opportunity to inject some humour into it.
