i think this is almost the final version. Many thanks to the people who played this game, others who gave me suggestions and darkhog who collaborated with gfx and code.

Updates

  • Killer theme song!
  • Realistic sound effects!
  • Wave counter!
  • Beautiful scrolling starfield! (by darkhog)
  • A new turtle: The Big Bad Boss! Twice the size, twice the lasers!
  • Do you have fast reflexes? As you progress harder it becomes.
  • Test your marks'turtle'ship: don't miss a bullet or your score will be cut by half. Are you a good shooter? (suggestion by darkhog)

I will search for bugs and decide if i need do adjust something. So it will become a final version.

Updates 0.9

I think I can call it a final version. I added darkhog's suggestion, the game pause after you loose a life. The code isn't that good, but i think i made it: this is the first time that I finish a game. Thanks to the people who played this game or gave suggestions, like darkhog who collaborated. Thanks, man. The experience is good, it's like that old games made by a one person. Now i will start my next game: I am late!. I will post the beta soon.

Now I want to see your scores!

Cool game, but why only 1 life?

Got a few levels in before it crashed with this error:

Line 182: Attempt to perform arithmetic on global "difficult" (a nil value)

Nice work! Timing the shots to hit the enemies at different speeds is actually a lot of fun. Might be cool if there were some incentive to use less bullets?

Thought about that "incentive to use less bullets" Rhys mentioned and while you could use ammo counter for that, I think it's been overdone. How about this:

When you shoot a turtle, you get points. But if your bullet leaves screen without killing any, you LOSE half as much points that you'd gain by killing a turtle.

//edit: How about I'd try to make better graphics for your game as a way to get myself more accustomed with Pico-8's palette? Is that okay with you?

Hey, darkhog

I liked your suggestion, i will implement this scoring system. What about this: if the player get X points (every 2000 points or so) he enters in a "special" mode where he can shoot two bullets, without losing points when missed.

I will accept your help for the graphics, i am a backend programmer, I don`'t know how to make pretty things :p.

How about this?

I've done only titlescreen plus changed few enemy and player sprites. Haven't done anything for the planet or playfield (could make stars blinking though) but only because I am not sure what the planet is supposed to be. Is it half-destroyed or something?

8500 yeahhh

The enemies are the perfect speed to make them tricky but not impossible to hit. I like that.

Okay, added better stars. Now stars are different each time and they blink. I'll have to find a way to make them scroll. How do you like it, bass_8bit?

Nice title screen, thanks man. I wanted to do something like that, but my art skills are bad. Your makeover really was necessary. Some points:

  • The planet was a water planet, think Waterworld, but the oceans are drying in some places. Post apocalyptic, like Mad Max.

  • The star field is nice, i was thinking how to implement using a scroll. Could we get some stars in different colors (blue? yellow?), to give some contrast to the blackness of the space? What do you think?

I think non-white/gray stars would just mess with the player and make it hard to see enemies/bullets. We have only 16 colors after all (would prefer palette the size of NES' here, but you can't have everything).

Probably won't add much past this point as I feel like I'm stealing the show. It's bass_8bit's game, after all.

Hey man thanks for your help! I'm having a busy week, so development is slow :(. I will add the moving starfield and some other things i am tinkering. One question: i added a music in the title screen, but i couldn't find a i way to stop it, when the game really begins. How can i stop it from playing?

You need to add empty pattern with stop (square) flag set and then play it.

Also I've added moving starfield as last update. Just dl it.

I don't know why, but i updated the game, but the post of darkhog was updated, not the origina one. I have do learn how to use this forum..

Things I'd add:

  • Allow score to go into negatives - let the really bad players to go into huge negative score if they mess up so it is challenge to get back to 0 if you screw up big time.

  • Add some pause after being killed (like 3 seconds) so player can prepare to shoot again. Make it skippable though in case player is already ready.

I think halving the score on each miss makes it almost irrelevant, because 5 misses means your score is 1/32 of what it was. I like darkhog's original suggestion to do -25 points when you miss, because it makes more sense to me for limiting player shots. I'm guessing you don't want people to just spam shooting, but I was losing so many points that it was having the reverse effect: I didn't care about the score at all.

+1 to innomin's points, score drops so much that after it goes below 100 a couple times I just stopped bothering... Also seems a bit inconsistent with it being a laser, lasers are kind of spray and pray no? Maybe the score could drop X whenever you fire and give you 2x whenever it hits a target, if it does?

I want to update my cartdrige, but i can't do it in the "Submit Cartridge" options. It won't show this game. Do you know what could be?

I just played the current version and I gotta say, this would make a fun game of score attack competition. There's the whole risk/reward with each shot on a score vs. basis where you can even sorta bet your opponent will suck if you intentionally kill yourself with a high score. Stick a 2 minute time limit on there and you got a tournament worthy game.

I say let score go into negatives. As for updating the cart, just submit it as new one, don't make a thread and copy/paste code into OP.

@jcwilk if you were firing a laser IRL it would be a precision weapon that would hit it's target near instantly, so lasers in video games have nothing to do with realism and it's completely up to the author what they do. ...sorry i just had to get that out of my system haha...
