I was wondering its fair making the developer kit paid but why splore? Its actually a better version of the cartridge list on browser so why make it exclusive to the dev kit?

As for Splore not being free, if it were, would so many people who do not know how to program - would they still be willing to pay $15 ?

And $15 is honestly a bargain at least for me considering I've been coding in it and playing games and tools from others for over 5 years now.

Consider just that SPLORE is the icing on the cake, but you have to buy the cake first to put the icing on it.

Ya... I wouldn't undersell the IDE. And splore being a program bootable from the terminal.., how would you even give that away anyways? Seems like a weird question

Here in my country is fricking more than 100 in money
R$ to especific

P#104706 2022-01-10 02:31 ( Edited 2022-01-10 02:33)

I would calculate it to be about R$ 83.33, you are from South Africa ? Or correct me if I am wrong.

So, yep, that is a problem. but you know, you're not alone.

The reverse is true for us. These currencies:

  • Euro
  • Cayman Islands Dollar
  • British Pound
  • Jordanian Dinar
  • Omani Rial
  • Bahraini Dinar
  • Kuwaiti Dinar

Are worth more than the American dollar. So if we (Americans) try to purchase something from these countries, we also have to pay a premium to get them.

So let me ask you, @lucasdaweb95, how do you pay for other computer software for your computer ? And is this the first American software you have set out to purchase ?

Bit of a stretch to call pico-8 american software!

The instructions are in English. The code is in English. Last I checked English was the common language of the United States ...

Yet Pico-8 is actually from ... may I have the envelope please ...

Pico-8 is actually a 🇯🇵Japanese invention and software. Tokyo, Japan, Asia, Pacific, to be precise.

Alright, I was not expecting that. So we're blessed then that ZEP will take American Dollars instead of Yen.

Or are you now going to argue that Pico-8 =IS= American software, @merwok ? Which is it ? :)

In any case we're trying to find a solution here for our foreign friend.

Now we have these averages:

Milk (regular), (1 gallon) 61.37 R
Loaf of Fresh White Bread (1 lb) 12.89 R
Rice (white), (1 lb) 10.08 R
Eggs (regular) (12) 29.99 R

https://fx-rate.net/BRL/USD/

So if you convert from South African Rand to the American dollar, you are getting about the same amount for the same price we pay for the same staple items with the exception in here of Milk and Eggs which seem to be pretty exorbitant there. Milk here is about $2, $3 if you want the rice-milk variety, and eggs can be quite cheap, a dollar and a quarter a dozen if you look around.

So ... what this boils down to is - @zep could make some allowances for foreign soil. It could be done, it could be efficient, and I suspect it would net him more money than zero where some people are unable to afford Pico-8 at all.

People gotta eat.

A lot of my work is open source software, but I believe everyone is entitled to price their software and their time however they want.

(That said, Pico-8 is sometimes included in discount bundles and the like. You always have the option of waiting for one of those events if the pricetag is too steep for you).

I left a message in Twitter, @lucasdaweb95. That's where he is. Hopefully will hear back. Failing that I'm not sure. Does it say $15 there or does it show a different price ?

Can you please post a screen-shot of what you are seeing where it costs $80+ ?

P#104757 2022-01-10 18:56

zep is from New Zealand, he was inspired by british and american computers and lexaloffle is in Japan, so I am not saying where pico-8 is from!

to come back on topic and answer the OP: splore is a sub-program that’s part of pico8. pico8 needs a paid license. splore is not a separate program (like someone said, how would that make sense? browse games but can’t play them?)

enjoy playing games on this bbs and on other websites like itch. if you want to make games you have to get a license.

No worries, @merwok, I'm sure if you ask nicely someone will let you know. :)

Yes, @lucasdaweb95. You can play Pico-8 games right from these 3-links if you so choose.

Go HERE to play newest games:

https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?#sub=2&mode=carts&orderby=ts

Go HERE to play featured games:

https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?#sub=2&mode=carts&orderby=featured

Go HERE to play games you have favorited:

https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?#sub=2&mode=carts&orderby=favourites

So what is SPLORE then ? It's actually pretty close to those 3-links above with the exception you can use arrow keys to navigate around the carts. Other than that it is very similar.

Do you mean it's unfair for users who want SPLORE but don't want to pay for all the extra things in PICO-8? The main reason is that I don't think PICO-8 would work well split up like that -- apart from the pain of maintaining separate builds, I also hope a good number of players will get PICO-8 for the console experience but end up making things too.

I agree that $15 is expensive in some places though. I'd like to do regional pricing, but will likely only be possible once PICO-8 is released on Steam or some other store that allows it.
