Happy Holidays, everyone! This cartridge is my addition to the 2021 PICO-8 Advent Calendar, which you should also check out if you haven't already!

Controls

  • LEFT/RIGHT: Slow down or speed up. It is vital to get the right speed for some jumps
  • O (Z/C): Jump. You can get more height by going fast and/or holding the button longer.
  • X: To restart after crashing.

This game gets reasonably tricky; especially from level 3. But if you can reach the end, you'll get a simple ending along with your total time and number of restarts. The randomish elements in the game (you'll see what I mean) are actually deterministic, so it's possible to form strategies and optimise your time, if that's your cup of tea.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it even if only as a crashing-into-trees simulator.

This cartridge was heavily inspired by Skyroads and @jackson_allen's most excellent Christmas Sweater Generator

@zep, I shouldn't be needing to mention this as you created Pico-8, your game needs SCORE and HIGH-SCORE.

I can't get through level one yet I'd like to know how far I made it anyways. :)

Merry Christmas ...

I'm terrible at this, but it's delightful on a number of levels, not least the name. Also I would love to see a straight-up Skyroads demake, especially if the music were included...

This is my first finish of this game, cropped so as not to spoil any surprises.

I'm not going to try to get the restarts and time down at the moment; maybe next year. ;)

@zep great fun. But tough too.

Nice one @remcode! I don't think many people actually completed the game at all. I have trouble with enjoying making games that are difficult & even frustrating, but then also presenting them in a cute way that looks like it's going to be a relaxing experience.

@dw817 there is a highscore of sorts (total time / restarts), but it's only recorded on finishing the game. I think it would have alternatively worked as an endless runner (e.g. Canabalt style) with finer-grain progress feedback, but as a sort of action-puzzler that requires memorization I tend to think of progress feedback as implicit: "ok, I got up to that gap with the tree again". But yeah -- I agree it's not very rewarding at the start when you're just figuring out how to get through a row of trees.

@luchak Thanks! And agreed -- a Skyroads-like cartridge would be swell, and perhaps a good fit for 32k.
