Boo!

Some people may have seen my AstralBBS cartridge on here, and I think I want to continue setting up some fun online stuff with my server & Picotron.

For those who know nada of what I've got setup - I have a little home server running (on solar power, yum!) which I've been using for personal stuff and then hosting the Astral BBS.

I was thinking, with the server I have, I could host a steam-like dashboard for Picotron. I could use the bbs id in the form of picotron-[bbsid] for bbs posts - allowing you to have a steam forum thing on picotron (where any posts tagged with picotron-[bbsid] show up as posts in that game's page, and when you post something for that game, it shows up with that same tag.).

This could also be paired with some achievement system, (though it could be easily cheated), where games could have a setting to use it and let you have achievements on your profile. It could be made less cheatable with scoresub, but the server can't really access that since you need an auth key to access scoresub, even just to view. :(

Welcome to Splattered INK

A challenging 2D platformer game where you find your way through, at first, seemingly invisible levels.

This game is made mainly for me to practice level design. It is meant to be played on a keyboard and mouse but should also be playable on other devices. If you are playing on PC, I highly suggest using WASD instead of arrow keys for comfort but u can use both!

Let me know any feedback that I may apply to any future projects and have fun!

i should probably warn LOUD SOUNDS AHEAD, this is just a loud monkey bashing some cymbals.

but also yeah this really is just a loud monkey bashing some cymbals, while trying to just make music i found an effect that really sounded like that thing in tv shows when a kid is just bashing 2 lids of some trash cans, and then i made it sound kinda like regular cymbals, and immediatly my brain just pictured a monkey playing with cymbals and now here we are, listening to magnificent art.

i am sorry for making your ears bleed.

NOW WITH CURTAINS

Hello!

I've been working on a html editor in Picotron and I've encountered some behavior of chooser that doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Minimal example:

function _draw()
g:draw_all()
end

function _update()
g:update_all()
end

function _init()
g = create_gui()
window(240,80)
menuitem{
  id = "select",
  label = "Select",
  action = function()
    chooser(
      {
        path = "/",
        intention = "select_file"
      },
      function(msg) fn = msg.filename end
      )
  end
}
end

When unsandboxed, everything works perfectly. Using the menu item "Select" opens a file browser and I can use the selected filename provided for other tasks.

When sandboxed, clicking the "Select" option does nothing and no file browser is opened.

The reason I didn't expect this behavior is the manual indicates that "Selecting files via chooser() or wrangle_working_file() is taken as permission from the user to read and write them, and so can be accessed by sandboxed / BBS cartridges."

an idle game where you download idle games, featuring zodlex's vtuber since this is technically an art attack though i'm really stretching it here

mouse controls

tab through 8 bit steam to see the store page and your downloads page
minimize steam to see your desktop and upgrades

pico 8's integers are only 16 bit and i did very little to mitigate integer overflow. when you start to see upgrade costs in the negative, i think thats just when you consider the game won

edit:fixed a bug with the download all button working even when it wasn't drawn. this fix isn't in the file on artfight but i assume no one's actually going to run that file and this post will be the only way this game is played

The Astral Bulletin Board System

This is a cart to view the AstralBBS

This doesn't allow for signing up and logging in, or commenting and liking posts, but if the picotron post/get requests are secure and don't just default to http and lose the secureness of https, I might try add it!

This is seperate to the Lexaloffle BBS, and is run personally by me on my home server.
If you'd like a registration key, please contact me.
More information on the AstralBBS can be found here

@JTE - Made use of their GUI knowledge and based my GUI off of their GUI code for their unreleased BBS cart.

A new challenger has entered the world of magical combat! Prove your fighting prowess and defeat your opponent. Dodge and deflect his attacks and when you're ready, cast a powerful firebolt to break through his shield and do some real damage! But be careful - you need to time your shield right, or you'll be injured as well, and if you just let the enemy's attacks fly past you, eventually he'll unleash a special attack of his own!

How to Play

The game mostly plays like Pong, but with some twists:

  • You can only deflect the ball when you hold X to cast a shield.
  • When casting shield, you can't move, and you can only hold it for a few seconds before you run out of energy.

When using strings in your code it is sometimes useful to break them over multiple lines. Usually you would use the long strings [[text]] to do so, but this will introduce newlines into the string:

str = [[foo
bar]]
?str -- foo\nbar

If you don't want newlines in the string, there is a little-known feature of Lua that allows you to break short strings over lines:

str = "foo\z
bar"
?str -- foobar

While this works and prints the correct value (foobar), the syntax highlighting does not continue over the linebreak, and more importantly, the token count also breaks. Take this example:

foo = "\z
" function free_tokens() print('yay, ' .. 'free ' .. 'tokens!') end free_tokens()

This is only 4 tokens, yet runs fine!

Arrow keys to navigate menu, x when PLAY is selected to start the match.
During the match, left arrow to turn counter-clockwise, right arrow to turn clockwise. That's it.

I've searched a while and I could only find two other tron light bike games on pico-8 with CPU controlled opponents!
• Light bikes 2.0, by MAC785
• Lonely light bikes, by Kitasuna

Some friends invited me to jam with them, 5 days to make something in pico-8.

I originally intended to do something a lot more ambitious, but as soon as I had a couple bikes creating trails I saw that my method for creating trails (which was needed for the kind of thing I wanted to make) would near-instantly eat up all the CPU.

TL;DR at the bottom

Recently I posted a WIP asking for some help on how to better optimize my map/sprite sheet, but I deleted the post after actually reading the terms of use: I used genAI to assist me with the code. For this game I mostly followed the video of Krystman on how to make the movement as in Link's Awakening, but I also wanted to make my player turn around when pressing the buttons briefly(like in the classic pokemon games). That's when I asked ClaudeAI what was the better way to implement this.

As someone with art and illustration background, I hate Gen AI content. But to "talk" with Claude asking for some tips was really helpful at that point. After that I saw myself asking more and more for advice on how to implement more features (like a grabbing action to move furniture around like a sokoban and how to insert the movable furnitures without the map editor).

After reading the terms of use, I felt really really guilty about it. On the other hand, I really understood the code Claude sent me and I wrote everything again trying to match the style I was already using following Krystman. Now I just saw a reddit post from tsarkee saying the following: "if you use AI to assist with music, coding, or art, that is fine. Please just disclose that if you share the art/music/code in your post."

This game is a remake of the 16-bit game SWAP, released in 1990 by Microids on several computers (Atari ST, Amiga, CPC, ...).

The goal of the game is to clear an array of tiles, mainly by swapping them to bring tiles of the same colors next to each others. If you fail to remove all the tiles, you can select the 'abandon" option in the pico menu to exit the current game (you will loose a few points for each remaining tiles).

You can perform 3 different actions in the game:

  • Swapping two tiles,
  • Placing a tile from the reserve,
  • Triggering an avalanche to apply gravity to the tiles.

There is an embbeded "how to play" page accessible from the main menu that describes the different actions and how points are granted.

Basic player controller and collision detection and response system (along with a settings menu and map editor).

Controls:

  • Arrows keys for moving, navigating settings
  • z/c/n to toggle noclip, change tiles, or select either play or make map
  • x/v/m to return to settings menu, or select either play or make map

I did the majority of this in VSCode, #include was a lifesaver.
Feel free to use this system for like a platformer or something. I'm already going to be using this system for another game I plan to make.
Feedback will be read, system will be updated if there are areas to be improved upon.
Done in like... a week or so.

v1.2 (token shortening):
