Olden Peak: A Tiny Soulslike-Metroidvania

I made this game last year shortly after finishing Elden Ring. Olden Peak is a melee combat-focused metroidvania with some soulslike elements like limited healing flasks and stamina.

I released this (last year) on itch where you can find the well-formatted source code (the cart here has all my #includes unfolded so it's tougher to read).

Controls (Explained in-game)

X - jump
C - attack
double-tap left or right to roll
hold "up" to check your stats
press "down" to use a health flask

Attacking and rolling costs stamina. Your health and stamina go up when you 'level up'.

Boss Battle-focused

The bosses are the real highlight of this game. There are 3 total bosses, each with their own challenges. Let me know how many tries it takes for you to beat the final boss!

Power up by fighting "Elites"!

There are a few golden "elite" monsters hidden throughout the map. Defeating an elite permanently increases your attack damage, and there are 3 elites total. Let me know if you find them all!

I had so much fun making this game

I made this game a whole year ago so it's been quite a while, but looking back I really loved making this game. My dream game was always a "Pixel Art Soulslike Metroidvania", but man those take forever to make. Pico 8 was the perfect tool for this because it forced me to scope incredibly small; There was no risk of turning this project into a multi-year long slog. It ended up only taking me around 2 weeks to develop.

I'd been meaning to put this up on the BBS for a while now, so here it is. Hope you enjoy it!

Haven’t finished it yet, but it is very fun! The dodge roll is a great mechanic and the sword slash animation looks great. Died for the first time on the second boss, both are fun and well made.

I finished it, but only by grinding XP for a couple of extra levels to defeat the final boss. This is good design - skilled players will finish the game quickly and without backtracking, players like me will finish it eventually. Is there room for an end of game indicator of total XP acquired, and possibly time? The goal should be to minimise XP, not maximise it.

I really like how this establishes rules for how enemies "telegraph" their attack patterns, and then mixes them up in different ways for each boss. Gold star.

This is so awesome! I love souls games and I felt that this was a great tribute to them. The music and animation are great, and I had a ton of fun playing. Even though I beat the final boss on my first try, it was still exciting and tense! Great job, I can't wait to see whatever you make next.

when I thought I beat the ??? guy and he started talking I put my controller down and was just reading and then he suddenly went all out. Classic!

I accidentally found a bug.

In the room before the last checkpoint before the final boss, the room with two bats and two ghost things, you can grind faster by killing the 3 right most enemies and jumping on the red spikes to reload instead of going go the checkpoint and back.

If you keep doing it after level 11 or so, the game crashes with an out of memory error.
