Brief

Cao Cao the duck is hungry and loves shiny things. Can you help him fill his ravenous hunger? This game is basic and meant to be easy.

Game is currently under development, and as such maybe very broken or lacking game elements, I am learning as I go!

Controls

Move the duck using left and right arrows
there is a sliding mechanism once you stop using the keys

Rules

Collect the fruit and treasures to increase your score, see how high you can get! Don't miss them or you will lose.

Background

I created this game for my daughter to play. She is young and almost ready to enjoy gaming, she loves ducks and calls them Gaga.

I am just learning and this is the 2nd iteration of the game, the first is on itch.io already at
GaGa on itch.io

TODO

  • Wave notification - DONE
    • Palette swap at wave 10,20,30,40,50 (just learned how to do this)
    • Need to make this so works on division of 10, instead of static IFs
  • High score - DONE(ish)
    • ~~it does load and save new high scores ~~
  • Different score for items - DONE
    -Items also have probability spawning
    -Fruit and Veggie 80%
    -Bread, Candy, Cheese 15%
    -Treasure 5%
  • Background scenery - DONE its also a random cliff each new game
  • Last played - DONE cartdata stores the last time you played this cart
  • Sound effects -DONE
  • Custom menu items
  • Menu background
  • Music - DONE basic music has been added
  • Create proper label image - DONE
  • Splash effect when items hit the water
  • Upload to itch.io

FIXME

  • Wave notification - DONE
  • Player sprite doesn't stand out enough - DONE
  • Highscore - DONE
    • seems to have an issue with retrieving scores to print
    • overall colour and design needs re-thinking but i do like the rainbow
  • Scoring system is just not helpful, as @phil has mentioned. need to re-think this one

It looks good - the duck and fruit are well drawn.

An improvement could be that when you catch or miss an item that the value of the item is animated above the duck / in the water - teaching the player which items are more important (and introducing your daughter to number recognition)

Is there any way for the game to end without running out of points? And if not, what is the point of the high score table?

@phil thanks for the comments. yeah the points are kinda useless and you can't end the game till the points are zero...

The highscore current recorded the highest wave you get too instead.

Currently thinking of redoing the score to be life/hearts instead, something like start with 5 and collect to 10 and finish game when its 0/10.

I do like the idea of the numbers appearing above the collection, and had a similar thought, not sure how to best approach it yet :)
