This one is an oldie that some may remember. Wasn't the greatest of arcade games but for a time as a youth it was the arcade game I had the most access too.

Tried to make this pretty faithful to the original although I think it is too easy. Per the original there are two alien deployment patterns that alternate on levels. The large yellow UFO's also deploy as in the original. And the point value for the UFO's changes depending on the shot number you are on. Hint: 16th shot for max value.

Beautifully done !

I actually owned the hardware to this arcade game in my garage. Going to give you full marks here and adding to favorites.

Brings back lots of happy memories ! :D

Thanks dw817. That means a lot coming from someone with your abilities.

P#67644 2019-09-14 00:49

Who me ? :) Thanks ... I think I just have a lot of patience. Persistence. And ... obsession. Yes I really can get obsessed with things.

I'm playing your game proper now. Seems a bit faster than the original for main UFO and descending UFO. Here it is:

I kept telling myself I should fire up Mame and really work on the timing and feel of it. But I didn't :)

P#67666 2019-09-14 12:54

Good job on the colored overlay-like look!

P#67723 2019-09-16 04:03

Just bumped you up to two stars in my list of personal favorite carts now, z80jim. Congrats !

P#67724 2019-09-16 04:15

Thanks Vectorguy, I liked how that worked out.

dw817. I'm flattered. BTW the link works but the page it goes to doesn't work.

I'm pretty excited about my next game which, in my mind, is a Spectrum classic. I think I can pull it off even at my low skill level.

P#67734 2019-09-16 12:30

That's ... not good at all ?

I just clicked it from here, Firefox. Works.
Trying Opera. Works.
Trying Google Chrome. Works.

Could you please try again ? I have that clicking your icon does indeed bring up your game page at:

Clicking the icon does NOT just bring up and let you play the game without anything else. I want the click to go to the author's page where I can read comments, see updates, and THEN play the game if I so choose.

Please let me know if clicking your icon does not in fact bring up the page aforementioned above.

Thanks !

Looks like it is a Safari on Mac thing. I just tried Chrome on Mac and it works fine.

That surprises me though.
That is the first site I have run into that has that kind of a problem.

P#67741 2019-09-16 16:04

Odear ... so it doesn't work on the Macintosh w Safari ?

I've always relied on TUMBLR for free websites. I suppose I could put it on Writer's Cafe but that'd be chock full of ads.

Chris suggested MySpace but I really don't like the way they tick.

It does work in Chrome then. Let me add something to the notes there.

P#67744 2019-09-16 16:50

This is what it looks like in Safari. That was on my work Mac.
I will try a couple other Macs tonight.

P#67747 2019-09-16 17:23

Interesting, that is actually exactly how it is supposed to appear, if there were no images.

I'm using the <img> tag so I don't know any other way to do it.

I have noticed that TUMBLR gets all bent out of shape if you try to use <BR> or carriage-returns in your HTML. Let me see if there's a different way to present images in HTML and that might fix it right there.

also, if you move your mouse over that pink rectangle, does any text appear in hover-over ?

P#67748 2019-09-16 17:25

No reaction to any mouseovers etc.
Strange indeed.

P#67749 2019-09-16 17:32

Well my wife was able to try it on her Mac and she got the same bad result.
It does work properly on iPhone Safari which is really odd since Safari on Mac and iPhone and iPad are all Webkit based.

P#67753 2019-09-16 18:07

Got a bad idea I'm not going to solve this and it's something to do with TUMBLR, not my code. What I need is an HTML substitute for <IMG SRC=image.png> which does work fine here.

I tried one method of alternatively displaying an image. Definitely did not work.

<div style="background-image:url(image.png);"></div>

Are there any others ?

P#67756 2019-09-16 18:52 ( Edited 2019-09-16 18:54)

Here ... try it in SAFARI now:

P#67757 2019-09-16 19:08

Sorry but still no good. :(

P#67759 2019-09-16 19:17

Well dangit, thanks for checking ... running out of options here.

I'm curious. Let's try this.

<img src="https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/files/15232/me-square.jpg">

Save that as a .HTM, open it as a file in SAFARI and let me know please if it displays anything.

If it DOES display, that is you see my avatar, then the fault lies in TUMBLR and I may not have a fix for it. All I can do is put text (may not run in Safari).

P#67760 2019-09-16 19:19

There you go!

Your avatar showed up in Safari.
I also tried Chrome and that worked too, no surprise.

P#67761 2019-09-16 19:29

Well that's bad news then. That means ... Well, let's try this. I'm going to change my website to have JUST that code.
It may show up rather large, that's the default image handler in TUMBLR.

Please try the site again and let me know if you see anything.

P#67762 2019-09-16 19:30

Oh I see. Bummer.

Now the whole game display window shows just your avatar.

I haven't spent much time on tumbler but it's hard to believe there is that major of a Safari incompatibility.

P#67763 2019-09-16 19:33

That's good then !

That's all it was supposed to do.

I'm downloading SAFARI here. I'm told it's an old version and Apple stopped talking to Microsoft back in 2012, nonetheless I suspect my original page will also not appear in the SAFARI I'm downloading.

It's up to me now I think to get that page to appear in all browsers.

Thanks for your help, z80jim. If I get stuck, I will definitely call on you as you'll be much better navigating Safari than I will as I never have.

P#67764 2019-09-16 19:39 ( Edited 2019-09-16 19:41)

Houston we have liftoff !

Okay I was afraid of one or two things. One that Safari wouldn't run or two that my page would appear perfectly.

My page appears with a bunch of tiny ? marks so - YAHOO ! Going to heat up a fresh cup of coffee and take a microscope to it and find out what's going on - to find and make it work.

I'll keep you informed, Jim. Thanks again for your help !

P#67767 2019-09-16 19:52 ( Edited 2019-09-16 19:53)

Glad to.
It's been a welcome distraction today ha ha

P#67768 2019-09-16 20:00

... my findings:

Definitely not appearing. Changing some unnecessary tabulation. There !

Okay, I have it appearing in this version of SAFARI. Does it appear in YOUR Safari now ?

If the boxes do appear, please check HOVER to see that those two-special characters are appearing. A star before the number of and a game controller before the author's name.

P#67769 2019-09-16 20:04 ( Edited 2019-09-16 20:05)

Sorry but still nothing.
I am using Safari 12.1 on MacOS Mojave.

P#67771 2019-09-16 20:14

Well, let's see ... I am using Safari 5.1.7.

Just tested. Youtube says my version of Safari is too old and won't load their site at all.

Oops, your web browser is no longer supported.

Do you think I can find a more advanced version of Safari for Windows ?

Puzzling that the Safari I have here displays the page perfectly (and I'm not logged in, I made sure of that). Yet doesn't appear correctly on yours. Wonder if SAFARI has it out for TUMBLR. :D

P#67774 2019-09-16 20:34 ( Edited 2019-09-16 21:46)

Apple dropped Safari for Windows years ago. Apparently a long time ago based on your version number. So there should be no reason to try to support that.

I have no idea why the Mac version is wonky for you. :|

P#67783 2019-09-17 00:30

I'm not sure. Without a proper engine to deeply debug my code I'm not really sure what to do.

Just glad it runs in Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome, and perhaps a few others albeit not Safari.

Clearly for HTML coding, it's a jungle out there. :)
