This is my entry for the PICO-1k Jam 2026! I made it in about 2 hours and it takes up only 974 compressed bytes. I'm pretty proud of it all things considered. Especially the fact I managed to sneak some music in there with some memory shenanigans. My personal best is 31 seconds.

Fruit Box [PICO-8] — clear the orchard by making 10
Hi everyone! I’m releasing a PICO-8 version of Fruit Box, a fast arithmetic puzzle about spotting combinations, planning ahead, and clearing as many apples as possible before the clock runs out.
How to play
Every round starts with a 17×10 orchard containing 170 numbered apples and 120 seconds on the clock.
Choose a rectangle on the board. If the numbers on the remaining apples inside that rectangle add up to exactly 10, the selection is cleared. You earn one point for every apple removed. Empty spaces do not add to the total, so gaps created by earlier moves can become useful later.
The round ends when time runs out, or earlier if you clear the whole orchard. The perfect harvest is 170/170.

Controls
- Arrows — move the mouse cursor
- ❎ — pick up / put down
- 🅾️ — send the card under the cursor straight to its foundation.
- H — hint. U — undo. N — new deal.
Undo and hint are also in the pause menu if you're on a gamepad.
Notes
Columns re-space themselves as they get deep, so a full K-to-A run still fits on screen with every rank readable. The cursor turns green or red while you're holding cards depending on whether the drop you're hovering is legal.
Comes with three soundtracks, set MUSIC to SHUFFLE if you would like to listen to all of them during gameplay.
