What is This?

Matching game meets cats, that's what.

How do I play?

Press ⬅️/➡️/⬆️/⬇️ Arrow Keys to move the cursor. Press 🅾️/❎ to select an item, then press the direction you want the item to swap with and press 🅾️/❎ again. If you wish to deselect the tile, press 🅾️/❎ on the original tile again. The current tile and the selected tile are separated by an orange plate and a pink plate respectively. You can move items even if the moved item won't match with anything.

This is a usual Match-3 or Candy Crush Soda Saga game. You have to satisfy an amount of orders to play. Whenever you match a line of three goods horizontally or vertically, 1 order gets satisfied.

Whenever you match a line of four goods horizontally or vertically, you will trigger its ability while satisfying 2 orders at once. Any one than four goods horizontally or vertically in a line satisfies 3 orders! If you are able to satisfy all the orders after you use up all your moves, you win, else, you loose the game.

Every time you match a line of four goods (or more) horizontally or vertically, you gain a ⭐. You only collect all the ⭐s if you are able to satisfy the orders. If you have a certain amount of ⭐s, you unlock more goods with more abilities!

♪ Can you collect all the sets of goods? ♪

Credits & Motivation

The game was made by, me D3V?, of course, using Pico-8 under 2-3 weeks. The music was made by Gruber Music, it came from his Pico Tunes Vol.1 Pack, using the 'Villager' tune. Credit to Cmrn.io for "letting" me use their game, Match-3 as a template, my little brain could not have made one myself.

I had thought of making some kind of match game (with a cat of course, as cats are the main theme of my non-jam games till now)during my vacation, and threw out some ideas from my head to my notebook. There some more ideas I created, both for the abilities and the goods, which I wanted to implement, but I was running out of code and sprite space in Pico-8, (and motivation) to do it. However, in my opinion, the product is alright.

♥ Also, thanks to you for playing my game! ♥

this is quite a neat game, i'm enjoy the puzzle and how it doesn't put time pressure when i match each item. it did take me a bit to think of the 4 combos since i want to unlock every single parts. i did unlock them all btw. another thing, i like the cute food aesthetic being used!

lovely game!

have you thought about some bonus for T shapes of the same tile?

Good game. I don't get the "with cats" bit, but I like the progression.

However, a few notes. More than once I finished a combo, only to have a different combo go off. It seems you can't have more than one at the same time go off, and it's difficult sometimes to predict which one the game is going to choose.

Also, at the end of a round there's a point where you have zero moves, but you still have to input a move before it stops the round, even though it doesn't do anything with that move. It should stop before it lets you input a move, I would think.

Nice match-3 game, @D3V? . I noticed you had a little chibi-chef in the beginning. You might change the underline selecting an item to the chef him (or her) self.

They would just jump to the side of the food item and using U D L R would navigate them quickly around the food items, maybe even having their hands flip in the air when a swap is made.

Nice match 3 game. Due to the game's rule, I had to aim for 4 matches instead of double 3 matches to earn stars.
But regardless, it was fun like any match 3 games in which after making a match 3, random thing could happen to the board.
I got 130 stars and dunno what to do with them.

@VaniaIsAnIdiot, thanks for playing my game! I really appreciate it :).

@merwok, thanks for playing my game. However, due to my lack of proper coding experience, coding a T/L-shaped combo is out of my reach.

@joealarson, I did understand why it would be difficult to predict what would actually happen when you match something.

As per the last dummy move bug thingy, I may change that in another version.

I'll add more cat-related things in another version.

@dw817, I will add more cat related stuff in another version.

@Bloodbane, I'm planning to add more game-modes and challenges in another version of the game.

@D3V? So why not let people make multiple matches at once? Behind the scenes that would involve changing the way it matches, it's true. You'd have to first scan for any matches and mark them, then scan for more, and when you find them all, fire them all off at once. And if you simply count up the number of a certain item that matches, and if it's over 4, then fire off the special. That way things like T matches and L matches would also count. It would be a more complicated match, but it would also make the game more predictable, IMHO. But that's just my thought.

Also, I unlocked everything in the game and found myself with no reason to keep playing. Besides playing the last level just for the heck of it, there was nothing more to strive for.
