It does not include
What ever that means

P#83369 2020-10-26 15:46

It was still using #include in the exported cart (I thought it said it flattened it). All fixed up!

Geez, this is super impressive! A bit hard, but I got through button mashing a bit :D

Is this all on one cart? It plays online so it has to be, right?

Also, the tiny mashup names and sprites are very fun. :)

Alamantus (cool name), thanks for playing! I admit it is a bit difficult. The AI lacks finesse. Thankfully, I took the plunge to integrate the ultra moves, which (I personally feel) make this game an enjoyable challenge ^^

Unless you're really comfy with keyboard controls (which I am not...) you really need a controller for this one.

Yes, it's just one cart. It was a personal challenge to get it to fit in a single cart.

Very cool. We didn't have many fighting games (except the excellent he-man game).

P#83403 2020-10-27 15:40

Really impressive! Its hard af though haha. I've only been able to win once. A challenge is good though, keeps you coming back. I've never tried using a controller with pico-8 before, but I tried with this cart. I don't know if it is just my setup, but using an xbox360 controller on a mac it reads the left stick as you'd expect, but the 2 buttons are mapped to the dpad. All controller buttons (a,b,x,y) just open the menu (equivalent to keyboard enter).

UPDATE: Nevermind its just in the html version, works fine in native pico-8. I found this behavior is documented I just hadn't seen, my bad.

Hey bitwitch, thanks for playing! Yeah, I can't get my USB NES controller working properly in the HTML version either (even though it maps correctly here https://gamepad-tester.com/) - JoyToKey didn't even work (!?)

P#83418 2020-10-28 04:36

P#83471 2020-10-29 21:01

Wow...its great...would you be willing to share the unshorted source-code? I always wanted to program something like that in love2d.....but diden't found a good tutorial so far.

i want pico make more game like this! what a masterpiece!

P#98884 2021-10-20 06:45

Well, I beat it with Kyu and with Sol, though with Sol I literally just kept punching and that's it. I couldn't beat it with either Lua or Chi though because it seems to be pure luck for the last match-up with either. From what I can tell, the game isn't even rendering their combos, so just out of nowhere my hp bar would suddenly be empty.

If anyone else tries to take inspiration from this game, here's an important tip: delay after moves, block stun and damage stun are all really important for avoiding horribly jank melee combat.

P#98895 2021-10-20 11:11

thanks for the important tips! its really useful! :)

Super fighter game. Gold star to the victor.

Just suggesting, @BitwiseCreative.

You could have a unique text appear for each fighter after they win a fight against the others. There are many possibilities, including showing a quick set of 4-lines of text or so opening to selecting each character, their motive for being in the fight.

And then after each fight, a brief bit of text.

"No-one can stand up to the fury of Sol !"
"Is that the best you've got ?"
"I didn't want to hurt you but you got in my way."

Or more story-oriented.

"So tell me now where did the Black Jaguar go ?"
"You find a key to an abandoned building."

Since you have 4-fighters, assuming there are 8-rounds, that would be 8-lines of text per round for each fighter totaling 32-lines of text in all during combat. Perhaps each text giving hints to a story that is only revealed with the 8th round and the winning screen beyond that.

They did this for TEKKEN 3 for the PSX for instance. Lots of tease about the stories and backgrounds each of the characters have.
