So, this came out of an experiment to see how I could replicate the line scrolling effects in some of those classic 2d racing games. Somehow I got the idea to make it into a demake of Desert Bus, the mind-numbing driving simulator from the unreleased Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors for Sega CD. I sat on this for maybe a year because the code, especially the road-drawing, is pretty sloppy and I prefer my carts to be organized and well-documented... but, eh, what the heck.

Check the rear axle. Vehicle keeps veering to the right.

@dw817 That's part of the original game! Desert Bus requires you to drive for about 8 hours to finish it. To prevent you from just taping down the drive button and calling it a day, they make the vehicle veer right so you have to press left every once in a while, or else go off the road and come to a stop.

Truly one of the greatest games ever created. I have no idea why no one ported it to Pico-8 before me!

I take it you are not serious.

If you are interested in large vehicle drivers however, you might take a look at 18-wheeler for the Gameboy Advance going by the name of, "Big Mutha Truckers."

Silly name but good simulator for an 18-wheeler.

One of my favorites in the heavy vehicle racing genre is "Ice Road Truckers" for the PSP.

with your programming skills, chances are you could write something similar. :)

Not sure if intended or not, but the road drawing is wrong.
The width of the road should scale linearly on distance.
(Eg using 1/distance value)

@freds72 Definitely intended, wanted to give it a stylized look. Kind of like you're going over a never-ending hill.

Love your carts, by the way!

thks!
re-desert bus: really need something to do during these 8 hours!

  • getting passengers in check?
  • slowing down when passengers are green
  • avoid sheeps/cows/pick your desert hazard!
  • avoid potholes
  • ...

Very faithful demake! I'm going to start speedrunning it.

@freds72 - What?! Come on! Activities during Desert Bus? That's sacrilege!

Here's a full 8-hour playthrough of the original... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LtiHla1dNg. Make it all the way across the desert and after 8 hours you're rewarded with 1 point. Genius!

I stand corrected. Based on an existing game sponsored by Penn & Teller those bad-boy magicians ? Now I am suitably impressed !

@dw817 Definitely not joking. The original was a parody on the concept of a simulator by making the game as boring as possible - driving for 8 hours on a straight road.
