Thinking about it, but unsure whether I should post it there or not.

Let us know when you've something to show.

I'm regulary speaking about my Nano89 (A similar machine, but with a "real" fantasy CPU and memory), others inform about PicoLove and such things. So, go ahead, let's hear about your ideas :)

I see. Just so there's no confusion. I meant in its own thread, not as side mention when discussing the other stuff.

Depends how good the selection of colours is going to be.

What would be a "good selection of colours" in your opinion?

I think nic might be teasing darkhog about his legendary distaste for the Pico-8 colour palette...

The idea I have in mind is far more than Pico8 or Nano89 or any existing emulator. Still thinking about how I will implement what I want to implement, but yeah, would need clearance from zep to post thread with the little details I got already.

P#22870 2016-06-14 06:55 ( Edited 2016-06-14 10:55)

I want a system with 256 colors and 25x25 resolution.

Sure -- go for it. I'm sure it would be of interest to people here, and am happy to see PICO-8 inspired projects and other fantasy consoles springing up as long as they don't closely copy the tools & specs.

If you're thinking about doing something, do it. Believe in yourself. Not sure why you need convincing.

You might be interested in this article. It puts forth a theory about why Pico-8 has succeeded while more ambitious projects have failed.

Good article!

“... for making, sharing and playing tiny games and other computer programs.” - Zep

That's the difference. Making and Sharing are on the same level as Playing. Being able to easily play, see, and modify what others make is immensely powerful - it brings me back to typing in code from magazines, and tweaking it as I wanted. It gives me a sense of involvement that you just don't get with modern consoles. Like most successful projects, it does not stand alone - it is a combination of the project and the community that add to more than the sum of the parts.

FWIW - PICO-8 reminds me far less of consoles, and far more of ancient 8-bit computing - For me, the Atari 400. It's complex enough to be interesting, but limited enough that a smart kid who is dedicated can make useful/fun stuff. And it wasn't a $100 kickstarter.

I'm a huge fan of antirez' LOAD81:

http://github.com/antirez/load81.git

Its also a kind of 'fantasy console', albeit with higher resolution and more .. C64-like .. color scheme.
