hmmm... docking controllers. very colecovision :)

True ! I did not think about that.

But on a handheld, that would have been excellent. You can play with a friend face to face, on each side of the screen, not only side by side.

This is an extremely cool idea!

So cool !

Could this feasibly be made with a rasbpi? I'm not too familiar with the hobbyist hardware scene.

iv been working on a gameconsole from scratch.
this looks like a nice design (needs some wood grain in there i think)

a pi is posible i think but it needs some work with booting into the software and runing games, wich i find witout a keybourd curently would be a bit hard

it also reminds me of a game and watch

looking back on the idea, if its got some wireless and we hack up the picolove so it comes with a simple gui and like download center, it might just work on a pi.

I think intel edison board would be better as all pico standalone (sans webplayer and things like picolove) are x86-only for now. Given webplayer has some issues like choppy sound on more complex carts and lack of "hotswap" ability, you'd pretty much need standalone Pico.

wel they all can be ported to the pi or pi like device, both sdl and lua can run on it so its definatly posible to do. the edison isnt realy build for graphics in mind a minnowboard would be a beter option, still on the pricy side

your also looking at bootup speeds and might be beter to build from scratch similar to the picolove version but on a bare-metal implementation

you have to modify the engine anyway since you cant start a game without a keybourd

So far, my quest of a 128x128 (or multiple) LCD of sufficient dimensions has been a failure.

Will slowly work on 3D printing the case anyway

What about this 128x128

Love your plan, hope you get it working.

I got one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/262136737086
Super cheap and pretty easy to control. I have some code lying around for them if you want it.

I feel 1,44" is a bit small.

Ideally, I'd like to get something a bit bigger. Unfortunately, square lcds seem rare.

Oh well... rectangle will also do...

Very cool idea and design! Kickstart that thing, I'd back it.

Even if the screen isn't a nice square, a small-ish console with physical controllers for a cocktail-style experience would be a lot of fun...I think it would open up more games to being 2-player. Right now it seems kind of janky with two using the same keyboard or whatever...this would change that mindset.

Also, this would be great for kids. Drag it along to wherever and they could bust it out and both play without having to gather around an ipad or whatever. ...or maybe that's just my old school dream ;P

For about $200 you could buy multiple LED panels and get about a 10" diagonal screen. (2.5mm dot pitch - them's some fat pixels)
