This game is a play on the suddenly popular Dota 2 mod "Auto Chess". Instead of a chess board with entirely different mechanics, this uses a Go board. On each turn, the player gets a choice of 1 of 3 pieces randomly selected. Once placed, the opponent places a piece and the pieces all fight each other (by shooting projectiles). When a projectile hits an enemy, it damages the enemy player, which you can see by the red and green heart bars which match the pieces on the board in color.
There are 4 different pieces, each of which can be rotated in the 4 cardinal directions. An attack will be launched in the direction the piece points for each turn it remains on the board. When a piece takes 1 heart worth of damage or more in a turn, it is removed from the board.
The pieces have the following abilities.
- White arrows: Deal 1 point of base damage and have no damage modifiers
- Brown arrows: Deal 1/2 point of base damage and take 1/2 damage from attacks
- Red arrows: Deal 2 points of base damage and take double damage from attacks
- Yellow arrows: Deal 0 damage and have no damage modifiers. When the shot hits a friendly piece, that piece fires another time. When the shot hits an enemy piece, it rotates that piece to a random direction.
The easy difficulty, which the game starts on, places enemy pieces randomly. On hard difficulty, the enemy generally tries to place pieces to face a player's unit, though there is some randomness in there. I've found that hard is still not too hard, so I also increased the enemy health pool.
This is my first "finished" cart. I made it for the tinyTVjam. The score is along the top of the screen and the goal is to throw swords to defeat the green guy attacking you.
I could definitely improve some things, but it was fun to make a game on a virtual console on a virtual console.
