About this game

My second project for DATT2300-Game Development I at York University. A simple version of my board game for the project1 of that course. Also, my first game uses this ingenious engine, Pico-8.

Since this is only a simple version, the gameplay might be boring. If you are interested, I suggest taking a look at the "complexed" version of this Cat & Mouse, a board game with a unique map design and different types of interesting cards. It is a free workshop item published on steam made by Tabletop Simulator and here is the link: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2747751423

Controls

Press "X" on your keyboard to start the game. Press "C" on your keyboard to roll a die so that you can navigate your character by using the arrow keys.

Rules

The cat must catch all the mice before they collect three pieces of cheese on the board. Meanwhile, the team mouse's goal is to collect the cheese.

Players can move their character in any direction as they want basing on the number of the die they rolled. However, all the characters can't jump over a wall block and should only roll the die once per turn. The cat takes turns first and then the gray mouse and then the brown mouse.

Additionally, team mouse has a feature that after they collect one cheese, their number six of the die is replaced by number two. And after they have collected two cheese, their number five of the die is replaced by number one as well.

Credits

All the codes, art and music are designed by LemonL1ke. (me, the publisher). Additionally, I wanna say "thank u" to these two Youtube channels as they really help teach me how to use the Pico-8 engine. I highly recommend them to anyone who wanna try and learn the engine Pico-8.

It's a turn-based game, @LemonL1ke, so already you have my star.

However the game is a little predictable. I doubt very seriously the mice would win as they must hit 3-points on the corners whereas the cat need only reach 2 closer to the center.

That and the absence of TACTIC and TRAP cards as seen in the original also makes the game a little too simple and predictable.

Nonetheless this would clearly be fun if for a short while for 2-people. You might consider letting the player be either the cat or the two mice and the computer controls the latter for 1-player.

@LemonL1ke

The game is good.
But I think it does’t need to show “welcome” every time.

Thanks for pointing out some issues and all the advice. It's interesting that while I was playtesting the game, actually mouse always won, so I decided to nerf them again and again, lol. But anyway, the game is almost entirely based on luck so far. I will update this game and bring more fun elements into it in the summer. I am too busy with other university assignments and tests these days:(

Hi @LemonL1ke. Now that I play it a bit, this game reminds me strongly of an older one called WOWZO for the Apple ][. I can't seem to find any video in Youtube for it but it comes from, "Beagle Bros" software. Check it out if you can.

Information:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beagle_Bag#Wowzo

Actual gameplay, click the green "Click to begin" and using the LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys, select WOWZO form the menu and press ENTER. Answer the questions and press ENTER to confirm.
