This is a first attempt at creating a bump map lighting effect. The funky gray plasma thing is just there for pizzazz. The world can always use more pizzazz.

With lighting like this, it should be possible to make some interesting games with tricky illumination effects. :)
Just yesterday I was playing Action 52, and while most of the games are pretty bad, there was one that used a primitive lighting system so it starts out with the lights on, but after a long moment the lights change so its hard to see.
Shoot a bad guy, and the lights go on again for a moment, then back off. The trick is to keep shooting bad guys so you can find your way around the maze.
