I've read in the forums that replacing palette colours should be possible, but there's no indication of how you might go about it.
Can anyone give me some pointers?

See: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=2275 Not possible, we're stuck with the 16 colors for better or worse. There's suggestion that you might be able to reorder them but that's obviously of limited use.
