This is my first cart for the Pico-8. It's not much, just me getting used to Lua and the Pico-8 API. There are a few rough edges and the cart doesn't do much. It's not a game, just a bouncing orange that gives off sparks.

I hope to be able to spend time making this a bit better and learning some tricks on how to make the graphics and physics better. Then I'll progress onto something more interactive, perhaps.

Enjoy the hypnotic dance of the electric orange.

Version 0.1 was the original upload [https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/cart_info.php?cid=tipaheduyi-0]

Version 0.2 has better orange physics [https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/cart_info.php?cid=tipaheduyi-1]

Version 0.3 has better re-draw [https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/cart_info.php?cid=tipaheduyi-2]

Do a Breakout clone with this orange! There are a lot of Breakout clones on this site, yours will have a physics and a sound.

NO MORE BREAKOUT, please !! I beg of you ... :q

We have so many of these already. Heck we need a category called, "I'm Learning Breakout At School" at this point.

Yeah, I noticed the glut of breakout clones. I think I'll try to avoid that. First, I'll fix the things wrong with this code, then expand it to have some user interaction and some...um...point.

I've updated the cart for better orange physics. I'm not sure why the old version is the one showing and I can't comment on the new one. I'm learning.

The next version I hope to have smoother re-draw. I currently clear the screen for each frame, which I think is the reason for the flicker. A more intelligent erasure will be better. I might have to rethink how I'm drawing these objects; I'm not using sprites at all yet.

Hmm ... if you want to have a bit of a "show," have the orange put off bigger pieces when it hits and shrink in size and compensate the bounce up for the new size until it vanishes completely.

Then start a new orange from the ceiling.

@dw817 That's a great idea! Thanks for the feedback!

I'm thinking, graphically, I'd like to have some background. I'll have to rethink my draw/erase strategy.

I'm starting think of ways which an interactive game might come from this, too... I'll to try a few things and see what's 'fun'. Maybe a character at the bottom of the screen which you can control, avoiding being squashed, but trying to catch the orange when it gets to a certain size, or catch the bits that fly off (I'll have to make some big bbits fly off sometimes).
