It might be cool to have another type of empty floor, that instead of killing the player, acts as a door going in a different room. The same could be done when reaching the ceiling.
To work correctly, the player would have to be created at the same x,y coordinates and keep the momentum from the room it is coming from.

The current doors will be replaced with customisable doors in one of the 0.3.* updates. One of their properties is the size of the collision box, so it will be possible to make a large flat door and then stick it just below the ground (with void base type), or near the top.

Same goes for large doors on the sides. In both cases, the player position is preserved relative to the collision box.

Good point about also preserving the player's momentum. Noted!

(that would require doors that would lead to different places in within the same room, though... as well, as a weapon to spawn doors... but I'm dreaming too much again :P)

With the "scripting update" it could be possible; but customizable doors are among the things i'm most excited about, together with the monster editor
