A mashup of Snake and Tetris. Made for the Retrospelsmässan (http://www.retrospelsmassan.se/eng/) Game Jam.

Music and sound by sfabian. The music is a mashup as well; if you're smarter than me you just might know of what.

This was demoed as basically an arcade game so optimized for that, with hiscore entry etc.

Love the music! That Nokia ringtone was unexpected. (I don't actually know the original piece the Nokia ringtone is based off of, but the Pico-8 instruments make it Nokia anyway :p)

I got 12559 as my score!
I enjoyed the game but I feel like it just devolves into putting the snakes verticlly in since it's less risky than curving.. IDK

@SmellyFishstiks: you're right, and it's something that's been pointed out. My idea was that it would be optimal to try to go for all the fruit you can - thereby curving - since the speed increases based on removed lines while the score only increases when you eat fruit. This assumes you're playing for score, of course, which you should be! As it stands now I think that doing straight snakes, while getting what fruit you can, will still usually get you more points since it is, as you say, much less risky.

The saving grace was that not very many people found this strategy on the event (Retrospelsmässan last year). And if I would tweak the numbers there might be a chance that my original idea could work, I think.

One of my greatest sorrows with this ongoing pandemic is that there wasn't a Retrospelsmässan this year. Making this game and seeing people play it and enjoy it, as simple as it is, was very rewarding. I hope I'll get to experience that again.

I should add that I really like the idea though, seems like it's a hard game to balance in the first place!

I’ve been playing this game again! It really shows the kind of great little games we can make with pico8 by combining two ideas.
