Finished up this platformer I started last year.
update 2021-04-02: a pico-8 update made the leaderboard screen stop working so i fixed it and improved the main menu a bit.

oh it seems if you view the high scores, it exits the game

@kittenm4ster sorry! I didn't think of checking the leaderboard mid-game. I uploaded a revision with a fix.
And I got a new high score while testing the changes in case anyone wants something to compete against
Great game! I like how it's an interesting twist on Donkey Kong. I also enjoyed the music and the interesting messages between each level.
The only thing that I thought was weird was that on one level there was a monkey on the picture platform and the character walked through it to take a photo. Not a big deal but thought I'd mention it.
Fun game overall!
on screen 7 when you start at the top climb to where you take a pic then jump over "bad boy" monkey to save a row of walking.
Very highly handy for speedrunners!
Really superb work, @mrjorts. And giving infinite lives gives me a good chance to challenge each level.
I lost like 5-lives on the 3rd level before I could reach the top. Fun to play. Gold star effort !
You could add a game option where your score is based upon how many lives you used to win the game.
A further one could be classic, with 3-lives and you must earn more along the way.

@dw817 thanks for playing! the high scores are sorted by deaths first, so your score is primarily determined by the lives you use, and by time second. i didn't want to have limited lives because i see it as being more likely to discourage people from seeing the rest of the game, but the downside is that you have to get through every level before you can submit a score, so a limited lives mode would probably be a good idea too.
@pixelperfect thanks for comments. the species of the bugs is classified, but if you look closely you can see that their speed when they fall off the platform is slightly faster than when they climb the vines, so the physics all check out :)
