Voxatron has a wiki!

http://voxatron.wikia.com/wiki/Voxatron_Wiki

However, it is in very bad shape! Before I came in to help, it only had the main page and a very basic table of the enemies. Right now, I'm working on filling out bare-bones pages for the enemies, but we'd appriciate it if you guys helped out!

We don't know much about Voxatron. It's only been out 2 days. But hopefully, we can learn everything there is to learn and catalogue it in this Wiki! When it is updated with more features or when we make more sense of the editor, hopefully the wiki will grow.

But that all starts with you!

+1, this is a great post to have in the forums.

I will try to help as much as I can

I wrote something int he first time playing its basic but helpfull

Thanks for your contribution! It's certainly helpful!

We need to get this off the ground and get it noticed. Hopefully, by the time Voxatron is updated with more features, we'll have a solid source of information.

I recommend you open the front page to editing too:
I made a Voxatron logo for the front page. :3

You also should get your own url for the wiki.

Power up page with images done

I did a page for the Voxode level editor, but for now I've just copied the text from the readme file that comes with the game, and then formatted it to display properly on the wiki page. Once I get time, I'll sit down and write out a proper one.

@Rammite Are you the owner of the wikia page? If so, can you give me access to all of the tools, including editing the home page? I'm studying interactive multimedia so I'd love to give the page design a go.

Item page also done

Fixed the grammar/spelling of the item and powerup pages. Also, fleshed out the info therein a bit more.

Much appreciated, as my english is far from being perfect.
Also, I got the lucky 1,000 edit medal, lol.

Off to sleep, I will finish the monster page tomorrow if its not done by then.
Also, GnomeSlice, the wiki founder is Grumpychris0 (http://voxatron.wikia.com/wiki/User:Grumpychris0)

@GnomeSlice: No, I'm not the owner, and I don't even know him. I'm just (to my knowledge) the first editor. I'll see if I can contact the owner and have him acknowledge our support.

Eesh, I've never used Wikia before. The formatting is a little unintuitive.

@Rammite I've already sent him a message, but it's still probably a good idea to get in touch with him. He's probably wondering why so many people are suddenly editing his wiki.

I found a bug: once i was playing my own voxatron level with the timeline, i exited the editor and the timeline was still there. when i played a BBS level, it showed the timeline for that level!!

Would love to help but for a reason unknown to me I cannot access any wikia pages, images, or anything else hosted under a .wikia URL (connection timeout, server is taking too long to respond). This problem has been plaguing me for a while, if anyone here happens to know what might be the problem let me know. In the meantime I'm going to do some google-assisted detective work

Hey, the wiki is looking great. I put a link from the main BBS page to this thread to hopefully generate more contributions. I'll add to it too when things settle down.

I'm a bit late to suggest this, but would you be interested in shifting the wiki on-site instead? I could install some standard wiki software.

Disadvantages:
Have to shift the existing entries over
Have to wait a couple of days for me to set it up

Advantages:
No advertising
Possible future features like cross-searching the BBS and wiki etc.

I think it's a great initiative and exactly what Voxatron needs. Especially for the ins and outs of using the designer.

Let me know what you think, I'm happy to go with either format but instinctively would like to move it on-site for greater future possibilities and because I find the advertising on wikia quite distracting.

I think that sooner or later the wiki would have to be shifted on site, its just more professional, and there would be more options for formatting.

Yeah, go for it! Right now, we only have 28 pages to tackle - moving it now will be much easier than the hundreds later down the road.

I'll be honest - I'm really proud of this wiki. It's gotten so far in so little time. manly tear

@zep That would probably be excellent, but I don't htink the wiki initiator is actually any of the users in this forum. However, a standalone wiki here would probably be ideal.

I agree with Rammite, making the change now is the best thing to do. I still have the imges from most pages and the background and logo, so that should not be a problem.
Im really proud of this wiki as well.

We just have to contact Grumpychris0 (the wiki founder), hopefully he will agree.

Honestly we don't need to contact Grumpychris0, he dosn't own Voxatron.

Not really, but if he refuses or something we might end up with 2 wikis. We will know wich one to use, of course, but new users might get confused

Not really, because the voxatron.wikisomthing url isnt even connected to this site except by this post.

I know, but the wiki will still be found on google. When I want info of a game "X", I google "X" wiki, I don't go into X's webpage to see if there is a wiki for the game.
Something similar happens to Team Fortress 2, there's an official wiki and the tf2 wiki.

And besides, being polite is never a bad idea. He created the wiki, so we should at least tell him the wiki is being moved.

True true...

I think moving the wiki to this site would be great! also, while it's here, maybe zep could help us with some of the harder to find stuff, like the dragon's exact health. XD

Indeed, he could also tell us the official monster names.
However, it would be interesting if he didn't, and let the monsters have any name we imagine, after all, voxatron is a lot about creating stuff, and letting our imagination flow (and we could just use generic names for the wiki, like the ones we have been using).

Yeah, that would be kinda cool. that's my favorite part about games in alpha, they evolve around the players.

Alright, I have decided whether the wiki should be moved, and my answer is......

It should be moved to the site.
:D

Joyous day!

Joyous day indeed!

Great! Cheers grumpy, and thanks for kicking it off in the first place.

I'm looking at a couple of wiki software possibilities. I'll keep you updated in this thread (there's a link at the top of the main BBS page).

I'm crunching for the next couple of days on vital BBS improvements and bug fixing, but will get to it as soon as I can.

Of course, I'll be glad to contribute to the wiki myself before too long. In the meantime I've enjoyed seeing the monster names you've come up with. The names I use internally are mostly silly, except that I quite like tinymon and multimon.

orange/purple gremlin
orange/red grunt
butamon, or sometimes basher
dillo
tinymon // little blue guy
multimon
stiltman
snail
dragon
alien

The dragon has 60 HP, but only takes 1/4 damage to his body (so, 240 body shots)

Adding the names now. Some are very silly but they blend well with the vibe of the game :P

:O 1/4th damage.. it all makes sense now! Thanks. I really like the dragon btw, it is very well made. I've fought him about 25 times, and its still fun! XD

@zep if it's not too much of a hassle, what wiki software have you been considering?

My main question though, was that since you've decided to move the wiki over to this site, how are you going to go about wiki administration? I don't think you'll be able to monitor the entire thing yourself. Perhaps some of the prominent users from the previous wiki? just tossing this out as it's something you'll likely need to consider.

Also, since you mentioned BBS improvements... we need to be able to remove uploaded files!

I'm leaning towards MediaWiki too. I'll have some time to install it tomorrow.

For sure, we need moderators! After it's up and running I'll add anyone from the existing wiki who's keen.

I'd be glad to help out, although I certainly won't be able to do it alone, what with college finals coming up. However, I take this sort of thing seriously, and I'll drop in whenever the opportunity presents itself.

On the actual topic of the wiki, did you have any special design planned for it @zep? I'm sure you could make it work following the same theme as the rest of the site, but I think it might be neat to spike it a bit. =]

I would like to help out as well.
My Holidays are 2 or 3 weeks away (and all the time-consuming stuff is pretty much done) so I will probably have lots and lots of free time.
I'm okay with MediaWiki, I will have to get used to it but I am a quick learner and I enjoy figuring out stuff.

Alright, I set up a mediawiki here: www.lexaloffle.com/voxwiki/

We should try it out a bit before moving anything over. Feel free to make test edits and let me know if you think it's suitable.

here's some help on editing:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing

It seems reasonably flexible and able to reproduce most of the formatting on the existing wiki

I enabled image uploading -- there's an upload file link on the bottom left.

I couldn't find a nice way to duplicate lexaloffle bbs accounts, so you'll have to sign up again sorry! For now, I just set it so anyone who is logged in to the wiki is allowed to edit pages. If that becomes a problem we can fall back to explicitly ok'ing editor accounts.

Looks great, zep! Much appreciated! I do like mediawiki, although I've heard it can be prone to spam. Hopefully there won't be much of a problem immediately, it can get worked out as we go.

Hey wait... The wiki refers to the level editor as "Voxode" for some reason, the readme refers to it as "Voxde", and the game itself refers to it as "Voxed". Which one is right? I was thinking "VoxEd" sounds correct... But now I'm not sure.

Aww. I tried to upload an image ( https://www.lexaloffle.com/voxwiki/index.php/File:Voxed.png ) and it gives me a PHP error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7056000 bytes) in /home/lexaloff/public_html/voxwiki/includes/media/Bitmap.php on line 362

What? :( Oh well. Page editing/creation works, though!

Nice, the new wiki is much better, the adverts on the old one were ruining it.

https://www.lexaloffle.com/voxwiki/index.php/Editor

Made a page similar to the wikia's Level Editor page. I'd like to think it's more accurate and slightly more complete (it contains sections for the editing area and the timeline, and mentions things change in the voxel editor, how could we forget that?), but not nearly as detailed yet.

The thumbnail on the page is File:Voxed.png, which works as a thumbnail only because I re-uploaded it paletted, but the history page gives the PHP error if you click on it, probably due to the older image being unable to generate a thumbnail at all. :(

I'd be glad to help out now that I can access the wiki (can't access .wikia sites for some reason), but someone needs to move the pages over first so I don't start writing out a page that already exists. Alternatively, if someone could post a list of the current pages here/ what pages need writing, that would be awesome.

I'm for moving the wiki away from "wikia". Wikia sucks. It's slooooow and bloated, not just ads but unnecessary interface elements.

I haven't encountered a problem with this mediawiki other than the memory thing for processing large images.

Based on the above error message and the file I used, I'm assuming the maximum size of a single image it can manage is roughly... 32kb? Maybe 24?

Even then it still displays as long as you use it full-size instead of thumbnailing it, and the image can always be replaced, although its properties page can't be accessed directly due to the out-of-memory error stopping it.

Oh, and there really wasn't much information on the wikia to begin with, unfortunately, so don't be afraid of rewriting everything. Yeah, there's a page on basic controls/gameplay, another listing all actors in the game, and another listing all items...

I guess the screenshots are salvageable, although I'd prefer versions without the grey grid on the bottom (save a vob and crop to just the generated thumbnail of the item, perhaps?) but all the real meat that NEEDS to be on a wiki is in the editor, which was barely fleshed out to begin with beyond the basic room editor's toolset.

In the last edit I added a section of "Tips and Tricks" which really NEED to find a way to be incorporated into the editor's page(s) at some point:

* Placing the actor that looks like the player in the room sets where the player will appear when the room is loaded. Placing a powerup or other item inside the player actor will cause them to immediately and unavoidably pick it up. This can be used to force the player to switch weapons or start with a bonus multiplier or just award health without leaving it laying around.

  • To make a room appear to be entered from a different direction, for instance when going 'backwards' from an alternate path, make a copy of the room and change the player actor. Select the room you want to copy in the rooms list, press Ctrl+C to copy, make a new room and make sure it's open in the room editor, press Ctrl+V to paste it. Note that all items and enemies will be spawned every time the player enters the room, so it's usually better not to leave free points laying around or remove them from the new copy.

  • Copying and pasting works in the voxel editor, too! You can use this to move items between the six pages of editable prop objects, and even copy actors and items and paste them into the object editor as statues. Placing statues of health packs in places where a player would really need them is a very evil thing to do!

  • There are six "voxel object banks" available to keep your level props and objects in. The first has a few default objects in it, but you can save or load entire pages to/from it by simply opening the page of objects you wish to save, hitting the "Save Level" button, and naming the file something that ends in .vob or .vob.png ... The resulting image will contain all of the objects in that page of objects, but will not be a playable level. Similarly, loading a set of props will replace the currently selected page.

  • Naming the first room "_dojo" makes the Sword of Fortune permanent, even if you take damage, and also makes the game start with one.

  • When using _dojo, grabbing another weapon powerup will still change your weapon, and when it runs out of ammo the player will be reverted to the normal pea shooter. However, picking up another Sword of Fortune will be permanent again. This can be useful for transitioning between shooting and swordfighting.

  • Item 9, the door object, has two modes: When used with "door mode" set to "off", the object appears in the map as a floating rainbow squid-thing and setting the room to go to as a room that doesn't exist (-1 is handy for this) or the same room, it normally ends the game. However, when door mode is "on", the game does not end and the invisible door item is instead "picked up" like every other item. This can be used to trigger events, such as hidden items that appear only when the player is standing directly on top of them.

  • Using multiple player spawn actors will teleport the player to each one as it is activated. This can be used in conjunction with events such as the invisible door objects outlined above or a timer after monsters have been defeated, to move players to an otherwise difficult to reach place, such as another room in the same area, or on top of a high pillar, without reloading the map.

These are all VERY useful things to know for any adventure-creator, and it took a while for me to learn all of them. The only thing I left out (because it wasn't officially released at the time...) is that you can copy-stamp actors between completely different files if you leave the editor open, which allows you to 'steal' the dragon boss actor from the alpha campaign if you have it, which is otherwise inaccessible since its object number was never added to the editor. (It is supposedly a pile of quick hacks just to show off that larger moving objects are possible, after all.)

I tried copy/pasting templates from wikia and (unsurprisingly) some worked and some didn't. I exported all the templates for media wiki, but sadly I need privileges to import them into voxatron's. I also copy/pasted the enemies pages (and added it's pictures) and it worked perfectly.
