Hi, I'm Donald and this is my first Pico-8 "cartridge"! I work at Explo, and during the summer at Explo, we like to dance the Numa!

Thanks Keiya for pointing out that my link to the YouTube video is insufficient credit to the original artists! The "Numa" song on which my chiptune tribute is based is titled "Dragostea Din Tei" and is by a Moldavian group, singing in Romanian, named "O-Zone".

The "0.1" version of this cartridge is all about transcribing the Numa Numa song to Pico-8 chiptunes. The little dancers just make it more fun to play along while you're listening :) However, we have grand plans at Explo to use this as the seed of a much more interesting game wherein you learn how to dance the Numa the Explo way.

That's a really nice conversion of the song. Looking forward to the how-to version. :)

Thanks Felice! I'm pretty proud of the transcription - it's my first attempt at any kind of chiptune.

The song is titled "Dragostea Din Tei" and is by a group named "O-Zone". Can we please, you know, credit other artists?

That's a good point. You're claiming a Creative Commons license for your work, but that might be kind of dodgy when your work is partially based on copyrighted material that's subject to a different licensing agreement.

I'm not sure how copyright changes or doesn't when you transform a work into another medium. Transcription might not count as transformative enough for the purposes of fair use. You should probably check on that, lest you invite difficulties down the road. I think the O-Zone guys/label must be pretty open-minded about free publicity, so I'm sure you'll be fine, but it's a good idea to look into it.

Thanks keiya and Felice for the notes about copyright + credit issues! keiya: I've updated the original post to give more explicit credit to the original artists, and to give you credit for pointing out my partial omission.

In terms of copyright, IANAL but I have reasonable confidence that a not-for-profit educational chiptunes tribute video game (with proper attribution to the original artist) falls under the umbrella of "fair use". It's ultimately up to lawyers to decide in the event of a dispute, but I'm not selling this game, nor do I plan to, and the CC license prohibits anybody who remixes my work to sell their versions or use it in commercial products.

However! I'm going to check about licensing the song for this purpose, just to be on the safe side. Thanks for the thoughts everybody.
