Learning a bit more!

This is a game where you're a bird that poops on cars.

This version is a complete rewrite in a more OO style. I'm figuring out my preferred way to work with Lua and organize game logic - feedback welcome.

I kept losing and had no idea why. It seemed to occur every time I shat on a car. I figured that was the point of the game so I was so confused.

Turns out I was being hit by cars. ?

Some recommendations:

  • Provide some form of instructions (Shit on cars! Don't get hit by cars! You lose if you get hit by one. Try for a high-flying score!)
  • Tell me how I died. (You got hit by a car!)
  • Why would the bird get hit by cars if it is high enough to shit on cars? It doesn't really make sense.

Ha, you're right that it doesn't make sense that the cars would hit the bird. That's a great idea to at least display a message like "you got hit by a car," that would be really simple to add.

I think I see some other cards have an instructions screen that you can access from the splash screen, like "press x to play, press o for instructions". I might try that.

On a related thought, a lot of retro games relied on you having read the manual before playing to learn how the game worked. How cute would be it if Pico-8 let you attach a "user manual" to each cart - maybe a text file, or a single image? idk

That would be nice. What most people do, since most games are posted only here in the BBS, is use the formatting available to give what is basically a manual below the player, in the cart post. Like this:

Fling!

Manual

Controls

U/D/L/R: move bird
X: turd bomb

Gameplay

Crap on as many cars as you can while avoiding being hit by them. Rack up a high-flying score!

Crazy game, @gregsabo. I'd worry about a bird that can do this in real life:

And yes, the logic a flying bird gets hit by a grounded object.

Still, a game is a game. :)
