Wondering which mini handheld (the ~3" screen variety) people have had good luck with for running PICO8. The fewer hoops to get setup the better. I'm not married to any brand per se but it'd be great if it was hovering around the $50 mark.

I've been playing Pico8 carts with a Miyoo Mini Plus under Onion OS. Easy to set up, WiFi support so you can just copy p8s across. Nice little machine!

I recently purchased a miyoo mini plus and wanted to add that it's been a joy to use. I'm using Onion OS as well and it runs pico-8 via an emulator called fake8. There is another handheld which runs Pico8 natively called the PowKiddy. I think LazyDevs recommended it in the past.

I've got the PowKiddy RGB30 and yes, it runs PICO-8 natively. I like it.

native pico 8 on muOS supported handhelds https://muos.dev

I have RGCubexx

I have a Miyoo Mini v4 (2.8" Screen) with MyMinUI installed and it runs Pico8 native, no wifi tho, so need to copy the p8 over, my 1:1 Device is a R36MAX thats 4" screen 720x720, again no wifi tho but does work with a dongle for Splore

@lemonzest, I suggest you try STAR SPLORE (I just released it).

It ranks all the featured carts by stars, and can launch them online or even offline (if the .p8.png is in the same folder).

I even provide a URLs text file for you to download all 499 featured carts at once with Wget.

Going by the 3ish inch screen and $50 price tag, you're looking at a lot of the Anbernic RGxx line or the Miyoo Mini Plus. I've been loving pico 8 on the Miyoo Mini Plus and it seems its pretty much identical on the RGxx line. You'll need to install custom firmware on them to get native pico 8 running, but you already kind of have to do that just to make any Linux handheld usable. Just make sure you get something with a Wifi chip so you can simply boot into Splore.

As far as BEST, you may have to pay a bit extra to get a square screen handheld. The above mentioned RGB30 is incredible for Pico8, but has some weird hardware quirks. LazyGameDev recently put out a video going over the Anbernic CUBEXX, which looks perfect, but it's around $80 and a good bit bigger than you're saying. :/

Luckily, I'd say we're in a spot where you don't need the BEST Pico 8 handheld because anything that has wifi and can run it natively is going to be pretty great for it.
