Controls

Use the arrow keys for your movement.

Press the X key to fire energy weapons.

Press Z to start the game.

What is?

An "OMG THE SUN IS PISSED AND YOU NEED TO ESCAPE"... game.

For some reason the SUN is really PISSED. You better be pushing your engines to the limit to escape! The gravity well of the SUN is slowly increasing over time. The gravity meter is seen along the bottom of the screen.

Asteroids knock you back and nebulas seize up your engine for a brief time.

You can use energy weapons to blow up asteroids before they hit you but if your weapons hit a nebula, they'll bounce back at you! Maybe you can use that to your advantage somehow?

Why is?

Made for the LOWREZJAM 2022 game jam! This is actually my (Chaz) first game jam ever! (Also my first GAME ever!) LOWREZJAM was picked because of the 64x64px requirement. It was very much in line with my current experiences with pixel art and the Pico 8 fantasy console. Actually got it submitted in time and everything too!

Credits

Chaz did most of the programming and most of the art. Cat contributed playtesting and various art contributions including the Sun. Gruber provided music via the Pico-8 Tunes Vol 2! Huge shoutout goes to LazyDevs who helped to power my game dev journey the last two months.

Sun Escapes Me has been updated to v1.0.4!

Changes:

  • Start screen has an improved look and some music to boot!
  • You can no longer coast through level 1. Asteroids falling into the sun will significantly increase gravity. 4+ falling into the sun basically make the game impossible. A few more than that will counteract your ship's thrust and kill you fully.
  • Level progression is no longer based upon score and rather the amount of objects passing on the screen (whether destroyed or not.)

I'm confused about level 2, @thechaz. Are you not supposed to shoot anything ?

Hey @dw817: The nebula reflect all shots back. You want to get this SUN guy off your tail. Could you use that reflection to your advantage?

Ah ! I did not know you could injure the sun at all. As I played this game I was very much reminded of the level in Super Nintendo "Aladdin" where he is escaping the lava behind him.
