Twelve months late, but I just stumbled across 'Mr Splode and the Fireworks Factory' by Joseph 'Lexaloffle' White. This game is amazing, and a very clever idea for gameplay. It's basically a simple 2D platform game, but your character can flick burning matches at boxes of fireworks. The gameplay is mostly based on running away from the fireworks as they fly around the level, setting off other boxes of fireworks. Very good fun indeed, and cute sprites as always!

This is another game I want to do a proper treatment of. One day..

By the way, here's ArmchairArmada's super 3d mock-up if you haven't seen it:

I saw that mock-up, it's quite a tease! o_o I'm always in two minds about 3D lo-fi stuff like that, and I sometimes think I'll give it a go... one of these days :D It's easy enough to do, it's just having the guts! Haha.

I hope you do go ahead with something Mr Splode related. It's a nice blend of action and strategy.

Kenneth Fejer does some nice low-res polygon models. Not just low-res in terms of geometry, but also the texture map, which gives it a nice pixel art feeling. You kind of have to let go a bit when you see the models rotating in all their non-filtered glory though. It's like listening to buzzy chip music. My favourite:

I'll certainly do an update of Splode sometime. My plan is to make a version with a simple map editor and bbs-postable levels. It's on my list after Lil Sprout (:

Did you work with Kenneth? I remember seeing some (I think fake) moks of a really nice looking platformer on the DS, I think it was an old NES game; there was a harp in it, and it kinda looked like it was set in ancient Greece.

Mr Splodge looks like fun!

I never worked with him, but I followed his pixel art for a long time.
Check it out! @ (includes the Kid Icarus-ish mockup you mentioned)

Amazing! And done with Photoshop =] I find it difficult to do pixel art in Photoshop.

His models are awsome too, for mobile phone games or DS or something. I'm not convinced he's done everything in Photoshop either!!

That was it 'Kid Icarus', but he's also done some other very nice platformer game gfx. Would have been ace working on Qwak with him. As it happens, I ended up doing all the art myself for the game, and some of the backgrounds leave a little to be desired (room for improvement).

Ha.. yes, a Kenneth Fejer Qwak could be quite nice.

I really like the feeling of games made solo though.. and Qwak is a good example. They have something unified and special about them, even if the gfx isn't quite perfect. Just a shame they take so long to make..
