How To Play

An updated take on the classic Snake formula. Snake is fun, but it tends to drag. That's where the DASH comes in. You can dash over walls AND yourself. This allows for much quicker gameplay, more unique situations, & a higher skill ceiling.

Combos add extra points when you eat food. Eating food with a dash is worth more points. Skillful balance of picking your path & timing your dashes is key!

I hope you enjoy, and thank you for playing.

About

(Random thoughts about the history & experience of my 1st game)

I've been programming & gaming for many years, but never made a game. This is my 1st! I took on this project to learn Pico-8 & finally do some proper game dev.

I started the game many years ago, just playing around, never intending to finish it. I continued to work on it in small bursts. Recently, I decided it'd be nice to actually finish a project. There's a lot to gain from the experience of finishing something! It's hard to trudge thru the boring stuff, stick with it, & get it over the finish line.

I'd never seen a Snake clone with a dash mechanic. Surely somebody somewhere tried this before me, but I never saw it.

This game has the most terrible programmer art you've ever seen. I am not an artist. If I keep making games, I want to improve that skill.

The code is proper shite. Proper shite! Mostly everything was written poorly (like, really poorly) & is a messy hack. Most of it makes no sense (but it does to me... sometimes), there's mixed styles, heaps of wasted tokens, & basically 0 proper systems for anything.

I tend to focus on code quality for other programming I do. All that was thrown out the window for the sake of it being a learning project.

BUT, I learned a ton! And the game is actually fun to play, so mission accomplished. If I had to rebuild this with what I know now, every aspect would easily be 100x better.

There's a bunch of obvious things that I should improve, fix, or add (like music), but I find that I could tweak on it literally forever. I wanted it to be "good enough" for what it is. That means you can play it, it generally works, and there isn't obvious missing shit that gets in the way of it feeling like a Real Game.

Special Thanks

CH for the inspiration to build stuff. BH & ZW for support & encouragement. Lexaloffle for creating Pico-8. And of course the Pico community for being awesome!

Thank you for reading!
