In this cart butterfly images are collected. This was done while experimenting with converting images to the PICO-8 and storing them in the cartridge. Compression is still missing.

There are many ways to compress pictures on Pico-8 today, @pararaum. I wrote one myself sometime back. It uses almost 8-bit compression which is about as tight as you can go for the storage of the data set.

If you're interested in virtual 256-color pictures, which would definitely help these butterfly images, you can find the code and external tool I wrote for this HERE:

Hi dw817!

Thank you very much for your comment, I had spotted https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=34058 but will definitely look into your cart. I have five images so the goal is to squeeze five images into a single cart.

Your link to https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=45648 actually made me smile, as this is exactly the same technique that was used in the retro micro-computer Commodore C64 nearly 40 years ago. So many fond memories. In my repo https://gitlab.com/pararaum/pico-8-playground I only added the reduced colour images. After I have added the full colour image, I will try the hi-colour version. Let's see how it will look.
